LOST Episode 6×06 “Sundown” - Screencaps, Easter Eggs, and Analysis

March 3, 2010

Tonight’s episode Sundown was very good, but not great.  Early receipts have this episode making a stronger showing than last week’s Lighthouse, but we have to disagree, based largely on Sundown’s lackluster flash sideways.  Sayid’s flash sideways couldn’t muster the intrigue that Jack’s story (from last week’s Lighthouse) did.  The island story was stronger, though, than the flash sideways, especially toward the end of the episode as duplicitous Sayid and Smokey came to town.  The final scene with Sayid, Claire, and Kate walking out in slow motion through the Temple was truly haunting as the lullaby “Catch a Falling Star” (which Claire had earlier been singing to herself) played eerily, followed by a chilling score from Michael Giacchino.  Kate looked truly petrified as she marched in tow with Flocke’s new crew.  Random musings:

  • We’re not sure if Sayid’s actions after he meet with Flocke were out of sheer motivation to see Nadia again or if he was actually “infected” and acting not as himself, which appears to be more the case for Claire.  Sayid’s behavior after his discussion with Flocke on how he could save Nadia from the dead directly parallels Anakin Skywalker’s behavior in Star Wars: Episode 3 - Revenge of the Sith.  As a refresher, Palpatine preys on Anakin’s insecurities about losing Padme by informing Anakin of a way to bring loved ones back from the dead.  From there, Anakin was taken hook, line, and sinker and did whatever Palpatine ordered, including exterminating almost the entire Jedi order.  Sayid’s behavior tonight echoed Anakin’s, when he took out Dogen (and Lennon) and enabled Smokey to basically exterminate anyone left at the Temple.  Coincidence?  Maybe, but we know how Damon loves Star Wars.
  • Sayid seems to be doomed to the role of the killer with the good heart.  In his flash sideways, it seems he truly does want to change his ways, similar to how he did off island as a member of the Oceanic 6, but it appears his destiny is as “a killer” as Ben once called him.  As a viewer, though, this is when Sayid is at his best.
  • We loved seeing Keamy again.  As soon as Omar appeared, we knew Keamy wasn’t far behind.  The only disappointing thing was not seeing Widmore.  We were pretty sure that Widmore would walk in after Keamy was taken out, but no such luck.  We’re convinced Widmore still plays a key role in the big picture.  We still don’t have an explanation as to how he knew that a war was coming as he told Locke last season.
  • After seeing Jin in Sayid’s flash sideways, we went back thr0ugh the Keamy scene to see if he had the watch on from Mr. Paik that Jin was sent to deliver.  Keamy certainly did have a large watch on, but it’s not definitive in the screencaps as to whether or not it’s the same watch.
  • It was refreshing for Miles and his witty banter to get a bit more screen time in this episode.  He obviously hasn’t had much of a role this season other than to inform Sawyer of dead Juliet’s afterlife thoughts.  It seems that by not killing him tonight when Smokey obliterated the Temple, he’s still going to be needed down the line.  Our guess is as some sort of medium between the Underworld and the Losties.
  • Keamy and Omar weren’t the only familiar faces in Sayid’s flash sideways, as good old Dr. Jack Shephard crossed Sayid and Nadia’s path at the hospital.
  • The first fight scene between Sayid and Dogen was badass.
  • It would seem that Dogen (and Lennon, for that matter) would appear to be done (i.e., staying dead), but something’s gnawing at us that we still don’t know all we need to about Dogen.
  • Dogen’s scene with his son and Jack in Jack’s flash sideways last episode now has a bit more meaning as we find out that Dogen had to leave his life in order to save his son after killing his son in an accident.
  • Where was Jin on the island?  Last we saw, he was with Claire and had made up a story that would keep him alive by being needed to show Claire the secret entrance to the Temple.  From there, we saw Flocke show up and then, in this episode, Flocke and Claire discuss her entry strategy.  It seems that as soon as we pick up a Lostie, we lose another.  As we picked up Ilana, Lapidus, Sun, and Linus, we have now separated from Jack, Hurley, Jin, Richard, and Sawyer.  We’re losing time to get everyone back together, so it can’t be too much longer, right?
  • It’s almost certainly a prop “oversight”, but for Easter Egg hounds, it’s worth noting that the license plate of the minivan in Nadia’s driveway (2SAQ321 - California) matched that of Jack’s Bronco in Lighthouse.
  • We’re yet to find out where Ilana got all her insider information about candidates, the Temple, etc.  It’s almost certainly from Jacob, that’s not really the intriguing part.  We’re more interested in interested in getting that back story.
  • This comment refers more to Lighthouse, but is worth reiterating.  We’re hoping Desmond shows up soon.  After getting that brief teaser in LA X, we’re craving more of our favorite Scot.  We’re hoping he’s the one that Jacob wants to bring to the island, but 108 was Wallace and was crossed out, so who knows.  In any event, bring back Des!

LOST Episode 6×05 “Lighthouse” - Screencaps, Easter Eggs, and Analysis

February 24, 2010

Last week’s episode “The Substitute” blew us away with an engaging “flash-sideways” and a revealing island story in which we finally got a glimpse into the meaning of the numbers. Could this week’s episode manage to follow suit? Although not quite as strong as its predecessor, “Lighthouse” delivered. Many fans have grown weary of Jack in the last couple of seasons (although he hasn’t achieved the level of hatred Kate enjoys), but personally I’ve always given him the benefit of the doubt, even if his flashbacks have included such stinkers as “Stranger in a Strange Land” and “Something Nice Back Home”. The twist of Jack being a father in the alt universe was unexpected (to me, at least) and brilliant. I was immediately drawn in, and the emotional payoff in the last flash-sideways scene was one of my favorite non-mythological moments of the season so far. Daddy issues be damned…Jack stepped up to the plate (gotta sneak in a baseball metaphor) to be the father Christian never was.
Thoughts:

  • In alt world, Jack apparently had his appendix removed as a child, although he doesn’t seem to remember it anymore (similar to his confusion over the cut on his neck in “LA X” ).  In the original island timeline, Juliet removed Jack’s appendix in “Something Nice Back Home”.
  • Jack’s son, David, is reading “The Annotated Alice” by Lewis Carroll.  Jack recalls reading it to David when he was little, similar to how he read “Alice in Wonderland” to his pseudo-son, Aaron, in a flash-forward from Season 4.
  • We still haven’t gotten resolution on Season 1 questions from “Raised by Another”, namely why must Claire alone raise Aaron?  To refresh your memory, the psychic Richard Malkin tells Claire:
    • It is crucial that you yourself raise this child.
    • This child parented by anyone else, anyone other than you — danger surrounds this baby…
    • Your nature, your spirit, your goodness, must be an influence in the development of this child.
    • There is no happy life — not for this child, not without you.
    • It can’t be another. You mustn’t allow another to raise your baby.
  • Pretty strong words, and at the time it seemed Aaron was destined to be extremely significant to the overall mythology of the series.  But from what we’ve seen to this point, that doesn’t seem to be the case.  After not seeing Kate’s name in the cave last week, I had an out-there theory that perhaps Kate was actually “in on the game” that is going on between Jacob and MIB.  I thought maybe Kate hadn’t been completely honest about her intentions to find Claire, and was possibly out to kill her to insure that Claire would not raise Aaron.  I know it would be completely out of character for Kate, but it would’ve been a hell of a twist.  This week we saw that Austen is indeed a candidate (number 51), so I’m throwing all of this out the window.  But I still need closure on Malkin’s psychic vision! (please, Darlton?)
  • The Season 1 nostalgia was in full effect tonight, including the discovery of Shannon’s inhaler, an Adam and Eve sighting, and a return trip to the caves.  Hurley even pointed out the “old school” feel.
  • Infected Claire annoys me.  I don’t know if I can handle a whole season of her like this.
  • The parallels between Season 6 and Season 1 have been even more literal than I expected, namely the episode centricity thus far matching season 1 episode for episode.  I’ve stayed spoiler free so far (whoo!) , so I’m not sure how long this trend will continue, but it will be interesting to see what they do in a couple of weeks when the “Charlie” episode would be expected (Season 1’s 7th episode was “The Moth” - a Charlie-centric episode).
  • The Lighthouse kicked ass.  I know people will bitch about the fact that the Losties somehow never saw the lighthouse before (I liked how the writer’s saw this coming, and used Jack to voice the fans’ inevitable frustration), but I’m willing to overlook this since we got even more answers! (2 weeks in a row…unheard of!)  The 360 degrees explains why the numbers in the cave didn’t go any higher than that.  I think Cunningham at 317 was the highest one.  We saw some more familiar names…Austen (Kate), Linus (Ben), and Dawson (Michael) for starters.  Jacob’s mirrors serving as a window into the candidates’ lives gives us an idea of how he was able to keep tabs on all them.  After all, he didn’t always have the luxury of the Flame Station.  The visions we saw in the mirrors included the church from Sawyer’s parents’ funeral, the temple where Jin and Sun got married, and Jack’s childhood home.
  • So who’s coming to the island?  Jacob instructed Hurley to turn the wheel to 108, which would peer into the life of Wallace.  Wallace!?  Really?  Will this turn out to actually be someone we know?  Or maybe it is unimportant and has nothing to do with who actually is coming to the island.  Please let it be Desmond.  With so few episodes remaining, we need to get our favorite Scot back on screen!
  • Who will David Shephard’s mother be?  There are some pictures on David’s bedroom wall (see pic below) that show a woman who might be his mother, although it doesn’t look like anyone we’ve seen to this point.  More likely it will be someone we know.  Let the speculation begin.

LOST Episode 6×04 “The Substitute” - Screencaps, Easter Eggs, & Analysis

February 17, 2010

After taking a week off, LOST redeemed itself this week with The Substitute. Chocked full of heavy hitting mythology, including what seems to be the explanation for the Numbers, this episode didn’t disappoint. The Smokey scenes on the island stole the show and almost rendered Locke’s parallel universe story moot. Surely most everyone will be clamoring for shots of the names on the cave walls, and there are plenty of familiar ones. Random musings:

  • Does the term The Substitute have a double meaning - one in each of the parallel universes?  Clearly in the “new” parallel universe, we see that Locke becomes a substitute teacher.  A look into the “old” parallel universe, where Locke is dead, could suggest that he is now a substitute body (a stand in of sorts) for MIB to use.
  • After over 5 seasons of wondering, it appears that the numbers refer to individual people, all of whom are or were candidates to become the next Jacob (”protector of the island”).  Many people have speculated that the end game of Lost will include the appointment of successors to Jacob and MIB, and this seems to lend credence to those theories.
  • It was certainly compelling that Kate does not represent one of the familiar numbers (Locke = 4, Reyes = 8, Ford = 15, Jarrah = 16, Shephard = 23, and Kwon = 42).  We were looking for Austen and 108 but found neither.  What does this mean for Kate?  Obviously Jacob still visited and touched her, but she doesn’t represent any of those famous 6 numbers we’re used to hearing.
  • Jacob appears to have been summoning candidates to the island for quite some time.  Members of the US Army team that arrived on the island in 1954 were well represented on the cave walls (Jones, Mattingly, and Cunningham).
  • MIB’s comment that Steinbeck’s “Of Mice and Men” (1937) was “well after his time” is another indicator that he’s  been around for a while.  We already saw MIB and what appeared to be the Black Rock in The Incident, but this is just one more occasion where MIB’s age is called to light.
  • Other names (some familiar, other not so much) found on the cave walls: (Claire / Aaron) Littleton, (Charlotte) Lewis, (Gary) Troup, Bargas, Aguila, O’Toole, Lacombe, Domingo, Grant, Goodspeed, Reynolds, Burke, Almeida, Costa, Faraday, Straume (why is he crossed out if he’s not dead?), Pace, and Rutherford.  We’re sure there are more that will surface
  • The young boy that Smokey and Sawyer saw would seem to be a young Jacob.  In the first scene, the blood on his hands may represent some sort of deed that got Jacob and/or MIB into a scenario where they were “trapped” and confined to the island for eternity, or until there were valid replacements.  In the later scene where there was no blood on the boy’s hands, the boy made sure MIB knew the rules that he couldn’t kill Sawyer.  We’ve seen countless reference to the rules and I’m certainly curious to see how these rules came about in the first place.
  • Seeing the island from Smokey’s point of view was sweet, including seeing his reflection in the barrack windows.
  • The inside joke Smokey mentioned as he took the white stone from the scale and hurled it into the water would seem to imply that Jacob was represented by the white stone.
  • What did Ilana mean when she said MIB was “stuck this way” in reference to not being able to change how he looks?  It appears that somehow through the fact that they have Locke’s body, MIB is no longer able to change bodies or take the form of another person.  More explanation needed here.
  • Certainly we’ve only heard MIB’s side of the story, but at this point I’m getting the impression that Jacob is the bad guy here.  I’m probably wrong, but it’s at least worth considering.  MIB laid out how Jacob manipulated the losties at vulnerable times in their lives, so we’ll have to see the reality of it.  Can’t wait for some more back story as to what put Jacob and MIB at odds and tethered them to the island.
  • Speaking of back stories, I also can’t wait to see Richard Alpert’s, particularly as it relates to MIB.  He seemed scared to death of MIB.
  • Why can’t MIB leave the island on his own?  On top of that, why can he leave if he’s accompanied by Sawyer?
  • Locke’s flash sideways was fairly uneventful, yet endearing.  It was nice to see Helen again.  It appears that Rose’s speech about not stopping living in denial and just living was enough to push John where he needed to go (no pun intended) as Helen recognized.  It was nice to see that Locke was perhaps finally getting over the hump.  We’ll see where we go from here because I’m not convinced we’re not going to see the Jack/Locke miracle story that was hinted at in LA X.
  • It was awesome to see Linus as a European History teacher.  Great stuff.

LOST Episode 6×03 “What Kate Does” - Screencaps, Easter Eggs, & Analysis

February 10, 2010

Well, we finally dusted off the keyboard for this? I have to say, after a sweet premiere last week, this week’s episode was not good.  Does it have to do with the fact that this week’s installment was Kate centric? Likely so. I hate feeling that way, but man her stuff’s getting old, especially the whole Keystone cops charade. OK, so it wasn’t a total loss, it just didn’t capture my imagination like LA X did. Random musings:

  • What the hell was Dogen typing at the beginning of the episode?  A guess would be some sort of communication to Jacob.  No idea on the delivery logistics, but that’s what popped into my head.  I loved Dogen rocking the old school typewriter.  It makes the Swan hatch PC look high tech.
  • My enthusiasm for seeing Arzt came and went very quickly.  I immediately remembered how annoying he is.  Am I a bad person for wishing he had been run over by the cabbie?
  • One of the major “on island” storylines was the whole “infection” saga with Sayid.  What we think we know from Rousseau’s crew is that once they went down under the temple, they came back out infected with the sickness, which basically turned them against Rousseau.  I assumed that Smokey had basically taken over their bodies, but now there may be more to it than that.  Is it some sort of reincarnation of an evil spirit?  Dogen and crew were intent on putting the kibosh to any such thing, citing Claire as exhibit A of the infection gone wrong.
  • We only got a small dose of Crazy Claire and it appears we were meant to liken her to Rousseau (see primitive booby traps and rifle toting, wild haired mad woman).  I don’t know that I’m buying a direct comparison.  Although a bit rough around the edges, I don’t believe Rousseau was infected like they’re suggesting Claire is.  In fact, she recognized the sickness within her clan and ended up having to kill them.  Back to Claire…we’ve been awaiting an explanation as to her peculiar behavior alongside Christian in Jacob’s cabin back in Season 4’s “Cabin Fever” and many suspected that she died in the attack on the barracks in “The Shape of Things to Come”.  So to hear that she’s infected suggests that, if her case was similar to Sayid’s, that she died and was inhabited by an evil spirit.
  • What’s with Dogen’s baseball?  We’ve seen a couple of baseball references surrounding Jack, including the Red Sox winning the World Series and Jack’s A-Rod mention in “Something Nice Back Home”.  This was no doubt a teaser for a future reveal of some sort.
  • What did Dogen mean when he said he was brought to the island like everyone else?  This would seem to be one of the overarching themes for this season.  We’ve seen Jacob touch specific people and have assumed that it somehow helped draw them to the island, but clearly more of an explanation is yet to come.
  • Observations about the Temple and the new Others: It struck me that the Temple seems more Mayan in nature rather than Egyptian, the new Others seem to wear drown and burgundy, and it stood out to me that the new Others are racially diverse (I thought they made a clear point of showing all sorts of races and backgrounds; the phrase “cradle of civilization” kept popping into my head for some reason).
  • Claire’s ultrasound reveals a date of October 22, 2004.  This is a full month after the original Flight 815 date of September 22, 2004.  This would seem to be no accident.  Are they trying to align Aaron’s births in the two parallel universes (Lostpedia mentions that Aaron was born on November 1, 2004)?  Curious…
  • I hated Lennon last week, but he grew on me this week.  Not sure why yet.
  • Is Kate’s redemption story going to surround her helping of Claire in the parallel universe?  Has she finally stopped running?  We also drew a parallel to this new story and how Kate had to help deliver Aaron back on the island.  I’m definitely more interested in Claire’s (and Aaron’s) parallel universe story than Kate’s.  We found each other questioning whether or not we believed Kate was innocent, but after a moment of pondering, we concluded that we really didn’t care.
  • Sawyer is vulnerable and seems intent on being alone.  I can’t help but think Flocke / Smokey will target him for manipulation.  I’m curious to see how Flocke / Smokey presents himself.  The last thing Sawyer probably heard about Locke was that he died from from Jack, Kate, or Hurley.
  • More deja vu moments: Kate spotting Jack at the airport leaving in the cab (could’ve just been from the pen encounter on the plane), Claire just knowing Aaron’s name, and Kate’s reaction to hearing the name Aaron.
  • Nice to see Ethan Rom…um, I mean Ethan Goodspeed.  If the hydrogen bomb sank the island, he would’ve just made it off in time as a baby.
  • We were desperate for a Richard Malkin tie in with the whole baby adoption thing, but alas, no luck.  We’re still holding out hope that Malkin’s work in Season 1’s “Raised by Another” is important to the overall story, particularly as it relates to Aaron.
  • Although not specifically related to this episode, I wanted to bring up a movie that many Lost fans are already well aware of: Donnie Darko.  I don’t want to spoil that movie, but fans have drawn similarities between Lost and Donnie Darko dating back to Lost’s use of time travel.  For me, it’s even more relevant now with the onset of a parallel universe this season.  Donnie Darko deals with a similar scenario, called a Tangent Universe, where Donnie is tasked with reconciling the two two universes.  I can see Desmond in a similar sort of role on Lost this season.  Maybe there’s no correlation, but it’s fun, and quite fascinating, to compare and contrast.  If you haven’t checked out Donnie Darko, you need to, just make sure you watch the Director’s Cut (and listen to the Director commentary as well).

We’ve posted screencaps on DarkUFO’s site, so check them out there.

LOST Episode 5×16 “The Incident” - Screencaps, Easter Eggs, Audio, & Analysis

May 13, 2009

Talk about an unbelievable episode to cap off another mind-blowing season of LOST. Absolutely loved this episode…sure most will agree. We may add some additional commentary to this post, so feel free to check back often. Call us and leave your thoughts on the episode at 920-626-6086. Here are a few initial thoughts:

  • So, Jacob is real…and he has an adversary.  My hunch is that their discussion at the beginning of the episode impacts the end game of the show.  It was probably no accident that Jacob and his enemy were dressed in white and black, respectively.  This contrast has been a theme on the show from the beginning.  So let’s play theory of the day.  What if…Jacob’s enemy is the smoke monster?  Here are some things that could support it:
    • The black attire would be a symbolic reference.
    • We’ve seen that Smokey can take human form (Yemi), so it stands to reason that he could take over Locke’s body.
    • If Smokey’s job is to judge, then it would make sense that he couldn’t kill Jacob if the judgement didn’t “authorize” it.  From there, a “loophole” would be needed…such as tricking someone else into doing it (see “Locke” and Ben).
    • Smokey could have even taken over Christian Shephard’s form when he told Frank and Sun to wait for John Locke.  Why would he know Locke was coming unless it was going to be him having taken over Locke’s body.
    • When Ben went to be judged, “Locke” and Smokey were never seen at the same time (at least I don’t believe so).  Locke disappeared into the jungle and came back and magically knew that they had to go to the Temple because the island told him.  Only after Locke left Ben alone in the temple did Smokey appear.  How convenient, too, that Smokey (via Alex) told Ben to follow Locke’s every order and not even think about trying to kill him again.  That would seem to begin to create the “loophole” needed for Jacob to be killed.
    • Jumping back to Jacob and his enemy’s conversation, if you consider some of the dialog between Jacob and his enemy with the mindset that his enemy is a human incarnate of Smokey, it would seem to support what we know of Smokey.  Here’s some dialog:
      • Jacob: You’ll have to ask them when they get here.
      • Enemy: I don’t have to ask.  [pause]  You brought them here.
    • You could look at “I don’t have to ask” a couple different ways.  You could just assume he doesn’t have to ask because he knows Jacob brought them.  However, you could also look at it like he doesn’t have to ask because he can read their minds once they get there like we’ve seen Smokey do.
    • More dialog:
      • Enemy: Still trying to prove me wrong, aren’ you?
      • Jacob: You are wrong.
      • Enemy: Am I?  They come, fight, they destroy, they corrupt.  It always ends the same.
    • The enemy is trying to pove a point that the any new island inhabitants will follow a predictable pattern that will end up resulting in their demise.  If looked at from Smokey’s perspective, if your role is to be a “security system” of sorts for the island and judge people on it, you’re basically just used to this pattern that unfortunately keeps playing out the same way.
    • Shifting gears away from Smokey a bit and onto Jacob, let’s focus on his response to his enemy:

      • Jacob: If it only ends once, anything that happens before that is just progress.
    • I believe Jacob is looking to end the cycle of people becoming evil, destructive, and corrupt.  When Ben talks later in the episode about “all those lists” that he had been given by Jacob, perhaps these lists are the people that Jacob feels can break the cycle.
    • I think Jacob now thinks that he has the right list of people to break that cycle with our Losties.  I think the end game might be whether or not they can break this cycle and possibly save the world by virtue of it.  When Jacob says, “They’re coming…” before he dies, he’s referring to our Losties, the ones he visited and made contact with (see my later comments on him literally touching them).  Maybe this is what changes one of the factors in the Valenzetti equation.  Maybe this is the forthcoming war: Good vs. Evil.  Maybe this is their destiny.
  • Switching gears, it was disappointing to not have Desmond, or Walt for that matter, in the finale.
  • I loved Miles’ voice of reason that perhaps by behaving in a certain way you think is going to change the future, you end up creating that exact future.   We’ll have to wait to find out if he was correct.
  • What a heartbreaking seen with Sawyer and Juliet.  I’m holding onto hope that perhaps if the Losties were sent back to 2007 when the bomb detonated, then Juliet may somehow survive <crosses fingers…and toes>.  I heart Juliet.
  • I took a great amount of sick pleasure in watching Phil get impaled, especially after grinning at Sawyer when he thought he was going to be able to shoot him (and obviously after hitting Juliet last week).
  • What’s in the guitar case?
  • It was great to see Rose and Bernard (and maybe even Vincent a little bit).  I could see them being Adam and Eve, but based on Jack’s comments in Season 1 that he estimated the bodies were deteriorating for 40-50 years, then that estimate was high and Rose and Bernard probably would’ve had to have died shortly after 1977.
  • Was the ship in the water the Black Rock?  Sure looked like it.  Based on the coversation between Jacob and his enemy, I’m not sure we’re going to get much more of a Black Rock story.  I could be wrong, but it may just have been used to demonstrate that at some point in the past, another group of people showed up and they fought, destroyed, and became corrupt.  We’ll see.
  • Now let’s check out the statue. We’re pretty sure it’s Taweret, as was suggested as a possibility after LaFleur:
  • Sobek may be another possibility…
Or at least someone is pretty convinced that’s who it is (this LOST episode is referenced in the Wikipedia entry).
    Sobek
(thanks to Wikipedia for the image)

Click the thumbnail below for a better look at the statue:

Something we noticed about Jacob’s visits was that he always seemed to touch those that he visited. In some cases, the camera made it very obvious that this was happening. It made us think that somehow by touching these people, Jacob was making some sort of connection that would draw them to the island. Jacob’s rival also made a statement early in the episode regarding how he thought Jacob brought the Black Rock folks there (”You brought them here.”). Take a look at pics from each of the visits that Jacob makes and see for yourself:

Clearly a set up episode this week, but a good episode nonetheless. A heavy dose of Richard Alpert is always a good thing, especially in both timelines 30 years apart. Leave your thoughts at 920-626-6086. Now on to our thoughts:

    • To me, the most important comment of the episode was Richard’s revelation that he watched the Losties die back in 1977.  This would indicate that we’ll find out next week whether or not whatever happened, happened or if free will wins out.  If whatever happened, happened then we’re losing a significant portion of the cast (Jack, Kate, Hurley, and Jin).
    • Yet another mention of Richard’s agelessness, this time by Ben.  Ben also referred to Richard as an “advisor”.  Many people have surmised that Richard was originally part of the Black Rock crew (if he’s not tied to the ancient Egyptian influences).  We saw him working on what appeared to be a model of the Black Rock ship.  Could this be a hint?
    • Despite my objections, it appears that Ellie may be pregnant with Daniel in 1977.  Widmore can be heard faintly discussing Ellie’s “condition” while he has his hand on her stomach.  This would put Faraday at about 30 years old when he died, although he seamed a fair amount older than that, hence my objections.
    • How did the island tell Locke exactly when to dispatch Richard to 2004 Locke?  It was nice to see how Richard knew, but it’s even more of a mystery now regarding John’s “communion” with the island.
    • When Radzinsky demanded that Sawyer draw a map, we couldn’t help but wonder if this would end up being an influence on the blast door map.  Probably not a big deal.
    • I was surprised to hear dissension from Richard regarding Locke (”I’m starting to think John Locke is going to be trouble.”), especially to Ben.  Richard was influential in getting John in place and ousting Ben.  WTF?
    • Are we finally going to get some insight into Jacob?  It sure would seem so based on Locke’s mission to take everyone to Jacob and then kill him.  So why does Locke now feel the need to kill Jacob?  Did the island tell him to do that?  If so, why?

LOST Episode 5×14 “The Variable” - Screencaps, Easter Eggs, Audio, & Analysis

As expected, fantastic episode. A lot to ponder.  Eric brought up a great point that it’s actually kind of devastating watching it through a second time when you think of the 30 years of heartbreak that Eloise and (probably to a lesser extent) Widmore had to go through knowing they were marching their son toward his death. Leave us your thoughts at 920-626-6086 for inclusion in the podcast.  On to our thoughts:

    • It looks like we can begin to piece things together regarding Hawking and Widmore’s “supervision” of Desmond (and Faraday for that matter).  Assuming they were given a “download” of information from either Farday’s notebook or some of the Losties (perhaps in exchange for getting the Losties back to 2007), it makes sense that they would steer him through life to make sure that he eventually ended up on the island.  This presumes that they know much of what is going to happen and they want it to happen and that they believe in free will.  Otherwise, perhaps they’d just fall into the ‘whatever happened, happened’ camp.  Widmore also spoke of having to “sacrifice” his relathionship with Penny, which tells me he had to do that to keep the intended path moving forward.  Also, I always thought Hawking believed in free will after she freaked out on Desmond in 3×08 Flashes Before Your Eyes when he wants the ring.  It’s either that or she’s been told that Desmond is uniquely and miraculously special, which brings me to…
    • How does Farady know that the rules don’t apply to Desmond?  Was it their conversation over the radio in 4×05 The Constant and the fallout from the Failsafe Key?  Plus, does he now believe that everyone has a similar ability to exercise free will like he seemed to be stating upon his return to the island?
    • Learning of how Widmore (through Hawking) had all of this future information in the past and how it seems he used it to shape how he acted in the future makes me really wonder if he’s really a bad guy or if he’s really just kind of stuck with having to carry out the master plan to get us to some future result.
    • So, Widmore is Faraday’s father after all, which in turn makes Daniel and Penny half siblings.  We speculated about that after 5×03 Jughead and ran a poll about it.  56% of almost 2500 respondents thought Widmore was NOT Faraday’s father.  This has been one of the few times when the popular opinion has been wrong.
    • I loved Faraday outing Miles as Chang’s kid.  Hopefully it will spur them on to future conversations.
    • Hawking told Desmond in 5×06 316 that the island wasn’t done with him yet.  If she’s truly at the point where she now doesn’t know what’s going to happen in the future (as she told Penny), then how did she know this?
    • Faraday getting killed sucked, especially when you realized it was by his own mother.
    • We should probably assume Farady is older than 30 in 2007 just based on his looks, but wouldn’t it be interesting if Widmore and Hawking chose to have Daniel only after having seen him in 1977.
    • So if Faraday kicked the bucket, then who was the mysterious voice we heard behind the camera in the Comic-Con video where Chang is making his plea for the re-constitution of the DHARMA Initiative (thanks Aaron for the heads up)?  It wouldn’t seem that they would’ve had time to film it together.  Perhaps Miles gave him the information, but it doesn’t seem to be Miles’ voice (he calls him Pierre as well, which Miles wouldn’t do).

LOST Episode 5×13 “Some Like it Hoth” - Screencaps, Easter Eggs, Audio, & Analysis

Good episode tonight. Nothing too earth shattering, but it was nice to finally fill in Miles’ storyline. We also enjoyed the banter between Miles and Hurley.  Leave us your thoughts at 920-626-6086 for inclusion in the podcast. On to our thoughts:

    • Recalling that Miles said he was from Reseda, I was waiting for young Miles to stumble upon Mr. Miyagi fixing Daniel LaRusso’s bike at the apartment complex.  For those of you who don’t know what the hell I’m talking about, you’ll have to brush up on your Karate Kid trivia.
    • After getting a taste of the Miles and Hurley pairing in Whatever Happened, Happened, I really enjoyed the pairing in this episode.  Their discussions generated most of the Get Lost COW (clip of the week) nominees.  Pretty funny stuff.
    • I can’t take the phrase “circle of trust” seriously after Meet the Parents.
    • The abundance of Star Wars references, all the way up to the episode title, were brilliant.  The writers must have been sucking up to Damon.
    • It was no surprise that Miles was Pierre Chang’s son.  Back after 5×04 The Little Prince we had a poll asking whether or not you thought that Chang was Miles’ father and over 90% of voters said yes.
    • It was funny watching Hurley squirm just a bit when one of the Swan builders was reading off the numbers.
    • We were treated to a new bit of intrigue last week with Ilana’s “What lies in the shadow of the statue?” question.  We saw in this episode that the goon who was with her on the beach, Bram, tried to redirect Miles from joining Widmore’s science team and asked Miles that same question.  It’s also noteworthy that this exchange took place back in 2004, so this new team has been in place for some time now.  Bram also hints at this “war” that we’ve heard about and that he believes Miles in going to be on the wrong team.  So, whose team is Bram on?  Vote below in our poll.  Popular choices include DHARMA and Ben.  DHARMA seems to make sense, but who knows.
    • I have a suspicion that Chang didn’t abandon or discard Miles and his mother like his mother made it sound.  Instead, I think getting them off the island will be some sort of precautionary measure to keep them safe.  I don’t have much of a basis for this other than a hunch predicated on the way Chang reacted to and played with baby Miles as older Miles looked on from a distance.
    • Once again, we got a not so subtle hint about the Egyptian influences on the island.  The chalkboard in the classroom was littered with history on Egyptian language.  My guess is that we’ll continue to get more Egyptian tie-ins yet this season.
    • Kate is an idiot for the way she handled Roger Linus.  I’m not sure what part of laying low she doesn’t understand.  Sigh…
    • News flash: Juliet is still hot.
    • LaFleur and our other Losties just might be screwed at this point after Phil saw the security tape and LaFleur subsequently knocked him out.  Will LaFleur be able to work his con man magic or is the cover finally blown?
    • Once I heard there were scientists from Ann Arbor coming in on the sub, I was a bit disappointed when it wasn’t the DeGroots.  Don’t get me wrong, I love Daniel, but it would’ve been great to finally get an “in person” look at the DeGroots.
