LOST Episode 6×05 “Lighthouse” - Screencaps, Easter Eggs, and Analysis

February 24, 2010

Last week’s episode “The Substitute” blew us away with an engaging “flash-sideways” and a revealing island story in which we finally got a glimpse into the meaning of the numbers. Could this week’s episode manage to follow suit? Although not quite as strong as its predecessor, “Lighthouse” delivered. Many fans have grown weary of Jack in the last couple of seasons (although he hasn’t achieved the level of hatred Kate enjoys), but personally I’ve always given him the benefit of the doubt, even if his flashbacks have included such stinkers as “Stranger in a Strange Land” and “Something Nice Back Home”. The twist of Jack being a father in the alt universe was unexpected (to me, at least) and brilliant. I was immediately drawn in, and the emotional payoff in the last flash-sideways scene was one of my favorite non-mythological moments of the season so far. Daddy issues be damned…Jack stepped up to the plate (gotta sneak in a baseball metaphor) to be the father Christian never was.
Thoughts:

  • In alt world, Jack apparently had his appendix removed as a child, although he doesn’t seem to remember it anymore (similar to his confusion over the cut on his neck in “LA X” ).  In the original island timeline, Juliet removed Jack’s appendix in “Something Nice Back Home”.
  • Jack’s son, David, is reading “The Annotated Alice” by Lewis Carroll.  Jack recalls reading it to David when he was little, similar to how he read “Alice in Wonderland” to his pseudo-son, Aaron, in a flash-forward from Season 4.
  • We still haven’t gotten resolution on Season 1 questions from “Raised by Another”, namely why must Claire alone raise Aaron?  To refresh your memory, the psychic Richard Malkin tells Claire:
    • It is crucial that you yourself raise this child.
    • This child parented by anyone else, anyone other than you — danger surrounds this baby…
    • Your nature, your spirit, your goodness, must be an influence in the development of this child.
    • There is no happy life — not for this child, not without you.
    • It can’t be another. You mustn’t allow another to raise your baby.
  • Pretty strong words, and at the time it seemed Aaron was destined to be extremely significant to the overall mythology of the series.  But from what we’ve seen to this point, that doesn’t seem to be the case.  After not seeing Kate’s name in the cave last week, I had an out-there theory that perhaps Kate was actually “in on the game” that is going on between Jacob and MIB.  I thought maybe Kate hadn’t been completely honest about her intentions to find Claire, and was possibly out to kill her to insure that Claire would not raise Aaron.  I know it would be completely out of character for Kate, but it would’ve been a hell of a twist.  This week we saw that Austen is indeed a candidate (number 51), so I’m throwing all of this out the window.  But I still need closure on Malkin’s psychic vision! (please, Darlton?)
  • The Season 1 nostalgia was in full effect tonight, including the discovery of Shannon’s inhaler, an Adam and Eve sighting, and a return trip to the caves.  Hurley even pointed out the “old school” feel.
  • Infected Claire annoys me.  I don’t know if I can handle a whole season of her like this.
  • The parallels between Season 6 and Season 1 have been even more literal than I expected, namely the episode centricity thus far matching season 1 episode for episode.  I’ve stayed spoiler free so far (whoo!) , so I’m not sure how long this trend will continue, but it will be interesting to see what they do in a couple of weeks when the “Charlie” episode would be expected (Season 1’s 7th episode was “The Moth” - a Charlie-centric episode).
  • The Lighthouse kicked ass.  I know people will bitch about the fact that the Losties somehow never saw the lighthouse before (I liked how the writer’s saw this coming, and used Jack to voice the fans’ inevitable frustration), but I’m willing to overlook this since we got even more answers! (2 weeks in a row…unheard of!)  The 360 degrees explains why the numbers in the cave didn’t go any higher than that.  I think Cunningham at 317 was the highest one.  We saw some more familiar names…Austen (Kate), Linus (Ben), and Dawson (Michael) for starters.  Jacob’s mirrors serving as a window into the candidates’ lives gives us an idea of how he was able to keep tabs on all them.  After all, he didn’t always have the luxury of the Flame Station.  The visions we saw in the mirrors included the church from Sawyer’s parents’ funeral, the temple where Jin and Sun got married, and Jack’s childhood home.
  • So who’s coming to the island?  Jacob instructed Hurley to turn the wheel to 108, which would peer into the life of Wallace.  Wallace!?  Really?  Will this turn out to actually be someone we know?  Or maybe it is unimportant and has nothing to do with who actually is coming to the island.  Please let it be Desmond.  With so few episodes remaining, we need to get our favorite Scot back on screen!
  • Who will David Shephard’s mother be?  There are some pictures on David’s bedroom wall (see pic below) that show a woman who might be his mother, although it doesn’t look like anyone we’ve seen to this point.  More likely it will be someone we know.  Let the speculation begin.

LOST Episode 5×16 “The Incident” - Screencaps, Easter Eggs, Audio, & Analysis

May 13, 2009

Talk about an unbelievable episode to cap off another mind-blowing season of LOST. Absolutely loved this episode…sure most will agree. We may add some additional commentary to this post, so feel free to check back often. Call us and leave your thoughts on the episode at 920-626-6086. Here are a few initial thoughts:

  • So, Jacob is real…and he has an adversary.  My hunch is that their discussion at the beginning of the episode impacts the end game of the show.  It was probably no accident that Jacob and his enemy were dressed in white and black, respectively.  This contrast has been a theme on the show from the beginning.  So let’s play theory of the day.  What if…Jacob’s enemy is the smoke monster?  Here are some things that could support it:
    • The black attire would be a symbolic reference.
    • We’ve seen that Smokey can take human form (Yemi), so it stands to reason that he could take over Locke’s body.
    • If Smokey’s job is to judge, then it would make sense that he couldn’t kill Jacob if the judgement didn’t “authorize” it.  From there, a “loophole” would be needed…such as tricking someone else into doing it (see “Locke” and Ben).
    • Smokey could have even taken over Christian Shephard’s form when he told Frank and Sun to wait for John Locke.  Why would he know Locke was coming unless it was going to be him having taken over Locke’s body.
    • When Ben went to be judged, “Locke” and Smokey were never seen at the same time (at least I don’t believe so).  Locke disappeared into the jungle and came back and magically knew that they had to go to the Temple because the island told him.  Only after Locke left Ben alone in the temple did Smokey appear.  How convenient, too, that Smokey (via Alex) told Ben to follow Locke’s every order and not even think about trying to kill him again.  That would seem to begin to create the “loophole” needed for Jacob to be killed.
    • Jumping back to Jacob and his enemy’s conversation, if you consider some of the dialog between Jacob and his enemy with the mindset that his enemy is a human incarnate of Smokey, it would seem to support what we know of Smokey.  Here’s some dialog:
      • Jacob: You’ll have to ask them when they get here.
      • Enemy: I don’t have to ask.  [pause]  You brought them here.
    • You could look at “I don’t have to ask” a couple different ways.  You could just assume he doesn’t have to ask because he knows Jacob brought them.  However, you could also look at it like he doesn’t have to ask because he can read their minds once they get there like we’ve seen Smokey do.
    • More dialog:
      • Enemy: Still trying to prove me wrong, aren’ you?
      • Jacob: You are wrong.
      • Enemy: Am I?  They come, fight, they destroy, they corrupt.  It always ends the same.
    • The enemy is trying to pove a point that the any new island inhabitants will follow a predictable pattern that will end up resulting in their demise.  If looked at from Smokey’s perspective, if your role is to be a “security system” of sorts for the island and judge people on it, you’re basically just used to this pattern that unfortunately keeps playing out the same way.
    • Shifting gears away from Smokey a bit and onto Jacob, let’s focus on his response to his enemy:

      • Jacob: If it only ends once, anything that happens before that is just progress.
    • I believe Jacob is looking to end the cycle of people becoming evil, destructive, and corrupt.  When Ben talks later in the episode about “all those lists” that he had been given by Jacob, perhaps these lists are the people that Jacob feels can break the cycle.
    • I think Jacob now thinks that he has the right list of people to break that cycle with our Losties.  I think the end game might be whether or not they can break this cycle and possibly save the world by virtue of it.  When Jacob says, “They’re coming…” before he dies, he’s referring to our Losties, the ones he visited and made contact with (see my later comments on him literally touching them).  Maybe this is what changes one of the factors in the Valenzetti equation.  Maybe this is the forthcoming war: Good vs. Evil.  Maybe this is their destiny.
  • Switching gears, it was disappointing to not have Desmond, or Walt for that matter, in the finale.
  • I loved Miles’ voice of reason that perhaps by behaving in a certain way you think is going to change the future, you end up creating that exact future.   We’ll have to wait to find out if he was correct.
  • What a heartbreaking seen with Sawyer and Juliet.  I’m holding onto hope that perhaps if the Losties were sent back to 2007 when the bomb detonated, then Juliet may somehow survive <crosses fingers…and toes>.  I heart Juliet.
  • I took a great amount of sick pleasure in watching Phil get impaled, especially after grinning at Sawyer when he thought he was going to be able to shoot him (and obviously after hitting Juliet last week).
  • What’s in the guitar case?
  • It was great to see Rose and Bernard (and maybe even Vincent a little bit).  I could see them being Adam and Eve, but based on Jack’s comments in Season 1 that he estimated the bodies were deteriorating for 40-50 years, then that estimate was high and Rose and Bernard probably would’ve had to have died shortly after 1977.
  • Was the ship in the water the Black Rock?  Sure looked like it.  Based on the coversation between Jacob and his enemy, I’m not sure we’re going to get much more of a Black Rock story.  I could be wrong, but it may just have been used to demonstrate that at some point in the past, another group of people showed up and they fought, destroyed, and became corrupt.  We’ll see.
  • Now let’s check out the statue. We’re pretty sure it’s Taweret, as was suggested as a possibility after LaFleur:
  • Sobek may be another possibility…
Or at least someone is pretty convinced that’s who it is (this LOST episode is referenced in the Wikipedia entry).
    Sobek

Something we noticed about Jacob’s visits was that he always seemed to touch those that he visited. In some cases, the camera made it very obvious that this was happening. It made us think that somehow by touching these people, Jacob was making some sort of connection that would draw them to the island. Jacob’s rival also made a statement early in the episode regarding how he thought Jacob brought the Black Rock folks there (”You brought them here.”). Take a look at pics from each of the visits that Jacob makes and see for yourself:

LOST Episode 5×10 “He’s Our You” - Screencaps, Easter Eggs, Audio, & Analysis

    March 26, 2009

Overall, we thought this was a pretty good episode. What a killer ending (pun intended)! We were both pretty shocked when Sayid shot Ben. We both loved the introduction of Oldham; excellent job of casting. What did you think? Let us know at 920-626-6086. Some additional thoughts:

    • To us, the big question is whether or not Ben is actually dead.  If he is, that would indicate that our Losties have the ability to change the future, rendering “whatever happened, happened” null and void. What do you think?  Vote below:
    • We loved the return of MacCuthcheon whiskey that Sayid was drinking at $120 a pop.
    • Another Geronimo Jackson appearance, this time on a poster in the cafeteria.
    • The DHARMA Chef logo is priceless.  The chef hat / toque is nice, but what really makes it is the fork and knife crisscrossed below that.  It’s got a bit of a buccaneer or pirate feel to it.
    • Roger Linus is a jackass.
    • OK, so Ilana’s not a marshal.  We challenged whether or not Ben could’ve hired her and pinned it on Avellino, the guy he shot on the golf course, but the timing doesn’t seem right.  Ben would’ve had to know well in advance that Ajira 316 was going to be the flight so he could tell Ilana what flight to be on w/ Sayid.  Ms. Hawking had told Ben the night before that there was a window to get back, but not with any details and not with enough time to get Ilana mobilized.  In addition, Ben seems truly shocked when he sees Sayid on the plane.
    • The introduction of Oldham was great.  Whether it was the ultra bizarre makeshift teepee, the phonograph, the truth serum, or the local neighborhood pedophile appearance, we were pretty captivated by this guy.  More of him would be a good thing.
    • It was great to hear an Ann Arbor mention.  It seems the DeGroots have the final say in sensitive matters.  We can only hope they visit the island soon.
    • It’s a bit off topic, but we can’t wait to see Desmond again.  We haven’t forgotten about him.  We now know that Sayid didn’t get Ben all bloody, so perhaps we’ll know soon enough what really happened and if it’ll drive Des to the island.
    • We may add some more thoughts over the next day or so, but we’ve got to call it a night…

Wow!  Awesome episode…Call us at 920-626-6086 and let us know what you thought!
There are almost 200 HQ screencaps below, but everyone’s going to want to see the four-toed statue (and see below for a few more related images):

Thanks to Wikipedia for the Anubis image.

    Initial reactions on the episode:

    • Obviously, the four-toed statue was incredible.  I can only hope we’ll see it again in the future, despite the time shifts stopping.  It definitely appears to be of Egyptian nature, which coincides with the hieroglyphics we’ve seen.  A possible identity for the statue is Anubis, the god of the dead in Egyptian mythology.  Anubis is also associated with the afterlife, which can also be referred to as the underworld.  We’ve been told that the Swan hieroglyphics meant “underworld” as well, not to mention that Cerberus, the name used in the blast door map to possibly identify the smoke monster, is commonly referred to as the guardian of the underworld in Greek mythology.  In addition, Paul’s necklace was an ankh, the same symbol held by many Egyptian gods, including Anubis.  A number of other Egyptian gods have been theorized as candidates for the statue including Horus (god of the sky and the obvious Horace Goodspeed reference), Osiris (ruler of the underworld and father of Anubis and Horus), Set (god of chaos and destruction and rival of Horus), and Tawaret (a deity of fertility or protection in pregnancy and childbirth where pregnant women wore amulets with her name or likeness to protect their pregnancies; also, Tawaret was typically reflected in images as pregnant, which could help explain why we only saw the back of the statue since a pregnant statue would be a nice surprise later — thanks to reader Joe for this feedback!) among others.  Check out this link (thanks to a DarkUFO reader) for pics and descriptions of a number of Egyptian gods. Also, check out some additional images of Anubis for comparison purposes:

Extra props to Joe, Keeping Pace, and Slone13 for pointing out this picture of Taweret. It makes a very strong case for the statue being Taweret, from the location and height of the ears to the headpiece to the items in her hands, to the four toes (hippos have four toes and Taweret is a hippo) not to mention my earlier comment that it would make sense that we only saw the back of the statue because Taweret is pregnant:

    • Note to self: don’t mix alcohol and dynamite.  Ever.
    • Loved the Geronimo Jackson shirt that Rosie was wearing.  We may even get more mentions in the future as it appears we’re going to hunker down in DHARMA days for a while.
    • Sawyer is awesome and LaFleur is a badass name.  End of subject.
    • Juliet is one damn fine woman.  How cool was it to see her have Sawyer’s back in front of everyone even when she knows he’s got a bad idea, take out an Other with a rifle before Sawyer can get a shot off, work under the DHARMA van with a grinder as a mechanic (sporting another new DHARMA logo with the wench), deliver a baby via C-section, and put together a great meal for her man (DHARMA Merlot included)?  I heart Juliet.
    • Speaking of Sawyer and Juliet, I love them together.  It’s too bad Suliet don’t sound cool.  Nonetheless, I was completely irritated at the sight of Kate at the end of the episode all because I suspect it’s going to throw a wrench into Sawyer and Juliet’s relationship.  Jaters, you can have her.  I wouldn’t have said that a few episodes ago when we saw Sawyer watch Kate with Claire.  At that point I was convinced that Sawyer and Kate had to end up together in the end despite both of their flaws.  You know what, though?  I think Juliet’s better for Sawyer.  Kate’s proven to be nothing but trouble with her vacillating back and forth and with her “run” mentality.  And I genuinely think 3 years is enough time to get over someone, particularly if you’ve met someone new that you think is fabulous.
    • LaFleur is French for “flower”, so I thought it was a nice touch to see Sawyer bring Juliet a flower.
    • Is Amy’s baby boy going to be someone we know?  I would guess it’s going to be someone significant, but tough to say exactly who it could be.  I wanted to suggest perhaps Desmond (a baby conceived and born on the island could account for him being “uniquely and miraculously special”), but the timing doesn’t seem quite right (Des seems a tad too old).  If it’s 1977 when the boy is born (Sawyer told Juliet it was 1974 when he was trying to convince her to stay for 2 weeks, plus it’s 3 years later), then the boy would be about 27 when Flight 815 crashed in 2004.  Is Horace going to be the father?  Whatever happened to Olivia, his wife when they found the Linus family after Ben was born and who taught on the island as part of the DHARMA Initiative?
    • If what Widmore said was true about his 30+ years as leader of the Others, then he would stand to be the leader during this era.  He claimed he led in peace, which is consistent with the “truce” between the Others and the DI.  It’d be sweet to see a middle aged Widmore consulting with Richard one of these episodes.
    • Charlotte’s mom’s voice reminded me of Penny, especially when she called Charlotte “Love”.  I’m certainly not implying that Penny is Charlotte’s mom, just commenting on the British accent.
    • Speaking of Charlotte, if we saw her here as a child of about 4 years old in 1974, then Ben had misinformation in Episode 4×02 Confirmed Dead when he claimed that she was born in 1979.
    • I wonder what Richard thought about Sawyer’s comments to him regarding Locke and Jughead?

LOST Episode 5×07 “The Life and Death of Jeremy Bentham” - Screencaps, Easter Eggs, and Analysis

    February 26, 2009

Overall, this was one of the weakest episodes this season.  The beginning and end of the episode were cool, but the middle seemed a bit hollow.  Thoughts:

    • Call in your thoughts on this episode to 920-626-6086.
    • Here’s to hoping that Caesar and Illana don’t end up being another Nikki and Paolo.  The jury’s still out.
    • Loved the scene with Widmore.  We started to fill in a few more details around Widmore’s history on the island (he was the leader, Ben tricked him off the island and exiled him, etc.).  I also loved his comment about the impending war that’s going to take place.  It seems it’ll be an epic struggle of good vs. evil and Ben vs. Widmore, but who’s the good and who’s evil?
    • Great to see Abaddon again, albeit his stay will apparently be short lived, literally.  So, as it turns out, he did work for Widmore and he did steer John towards Flight 815, something that may have been consistent with any number of our Losties.  So who has the keys to the future and knows what all is going to happen and to whom?  Who knew that our Losties had to be on Flight 815 and how did they know?  Similar question applies to Desmond and how Hawking knew that the island wasn’t done with him.  Are we going to have a similar jump from some future time to some past time where the folks from the future can tell the folks in the past what needs to happen?
    • Most of Locke’s visits with the O6 were boring and uneventful.  The best part was watching Abaddon heckle Locke after each unsuccessful recruiting attempt.
    • Are we done with Walt’s story?  I got the vibe that Locke was basically letting him go (”he’s been through enough” or something like that).  I’m holding onto a glimmer of hope that Walt is still relevant based on his premonitions of Locke, but it just appeared that Locke was content to wish Walt a happy life.  After the amount of focus on Walt for the first 2 seasons (he’s special, we got more than we bargained for, etc.), it’d be a shame for his story to just fade away.  Hell, I can’t believe it’s that tough to drag Malcolm David Kelley away from Chicken Nugget commercials.
    • It appears our hunch will be correct that the O6 or other members of Flight 316 will be the ones chasing Sawyer and crew in the outriggers.
    • What about Ms. Hawking caused Ben to turn on a dime and go from saving Locke to killing him?  Apparently Ben could not allow that meeting to take place.  That twist at the end of the episode was a nice one.

LOST Episode 5×04 “The Little Prince” - Easter Eggs, Screencaps, Analysis

    February 5, 2009

After the shocking (and for some, disappointing) death of Danielle Rousseau last season, many worried that we might miss out on her back story. The powers that be assured us that wasn’t the case, and it looks like they’re staying true to their word. As one who wasn’t a particularly big fan of Rousseau, I must admit that this storyline has really sucked me in. Due to the time traveling element, this flashback (if you can call it that) proves to be one of the most interesting yet. I’ll definitely be pulling out the old episodes to brush up on all of Danielle’s old scenes. The new younger, hotter Rousseau with a suddenly back-from-the-dead Jin (WTF?! That was one of the most shocking LOST moments I can remember, even more so than last weeks Widmore reveal) makes for must-watch TV in my book.

    Other highlights included:

    - The time-traveling Losties first encounter with…the Season 1 Losties. I’m guessing (and hoping) they’ll be more of these encounters in future episodes and I’m anxious to see what happens when they are actually seen or talked to by the past Losties. Remind anyone of Dr. Halliwax’s rabbit(s) from the Orchid video? Halliwax was adamant about not getting the rabbits too close to each other, and given Locke’s reluctance to talk to his former self, it looks like he’s thinking along the same lines. But I’m not sure if Sawyer will be able to hold off next time he sees Kate prancing through the jungle.

    - The return of Miss Littleton. I admit I was a little disappointed by the outcome of her storyline, though. I thought if she was the one after Aaron, then maybe we’d see Richard Malkin as the one who tipped her off. No such luck. It looks like Carole was just a decoy to throw us off Ben’s scent.

    - When Locke asked if anyone knew French, I was convinced we were going to see Rousseau’s crew (I was already hoping after there was a mysterious brunette in the trailer for this episode).  Turns out that “Besixdouze”, which is written on a can that’s been washed ashore, is French for B612, which coincidentally is the planet that the Little Prince is from.  Perhaps Aaron wasn’t the Little Prince that this episode was named after.  I think it might be the name of Rousseau’s ship.

    - Daniel’s explanation that the bloody noses may be due to “duration of exposure” on the island. And since Charlotte and Miles experience the bloody noses before Juliet (who has been on the island for over three years), it makes you wonder. We’ve already been given clues that Charlotte has been on the island (possibly even born there), but the news about Miles came as a surprise.  Could he perhaps be Pierre Chang’s son?

Miles: “Those yahoos have been here for months. I’ve never been here before two weeks ago.”
Daniel: “Are you sure about that?”

    - The Ajira water bottle. Looking forward for more to come on this mysterious airline.  A theory is that the Oceanic 6 brought this bottle upon their return to the island and that particular flash was acutally forward in time for the Losties.  Not sure that means that the Oceanic 6 were actually unknowingly shooting at the Losties or if there’s another group there as well (Widmore?).

    - Another anagram! After fruitless weeks of shoving odd sounding names into anagram finders (still can’t believe “Efren Salonga” turned up nothing), it was nice to score when “Canton-Rainier” came back with “reincarnation”. Possibly foreshadowing Locke’s reincarnation on the island? Or Jin’s reincarnation in the past? (I’m still convinced he couldn’t have survived that explosion)

Here’s this weeks favorite Easter eggs, screecaps (plus below that is a giant gallery of additional screecaps)… We don’t have any audio yet, but let us know what your favorite lines were and we’ll get a poll up. Loved Sawyer’s “Thank you Lord!…I take that back”
