LOST Episode 5×15 “Follow the Leader” - Screencaps, Easter Eggs, Audio, & Analysis
May 6, 2009 by Jeremy
Clearly a set up episode this week, but a good episode nonetheless. A heavy dose of Richard Alpert is always a good thing, especially in both timelines 30 years apart. Leave your thoughts at 920-626-6086. Now on to our thoughts:
- To me, the most important comment of the episode was Richard’s revelation that he watched the Losties die back in 1977. This would indicate that we’ll find out next week whether or not whatever happened, happened or if free will wins out. If whatever happened, happened then we’re losing a significant portion of the cast (Jack, Kate, Hurley, and Jin).
- Yet another mention of Richard’s agelessness, this time by Ben. Ben also referred to Richard as an “advisor”. Many people have surmised that Richard was originally part of the Black Rock crew (if he’s not tied to the ancient Egyptian influences). We saw him working on what appeared to be a model of the Black Rock ship. Could this be a hint?
- Despite my objections, it appears that Ellie may be pregnant with Daniel in 1977. Widmore can be heard faintly discussing Ellie’s “condition” while he has his hand on her stomach. This would put Faraday at about 30 years old when he died, although he seamed a fair amount older than that, hence my objections.
- How did the island tell Locke exactly when to dispatch Richard to 2004 Locke? It was nice to see how Richard knew, but it’s even more of a mystery now regarding John’s “communion” with the island.
- When Radzinsky demanded that Sawyer draw a map, we couldn’t help but wonder if this would end up being an influence on the blast door map. Probably not a big deal.
- I was surprised to hear dissension from Richard regarding Locke (”I’m starting to think John Locke is going to be trouble.”), especially to Ben. Richard was influential in getting John in place and ousting Ben. WTF?
- Are we finally going to get some insight into Jacob? It sure would seem so based on Locke’s mission to take everyone to Jacob and then kill him. So why does Locke now feel the need to kill Jacob? Did the island tell him to do that? If so, why?

Thinking out loud here..
So James, Juliet, and Kate go back home..
hmmm..
What if James, Juliet, and Kate stated that secret group working against Widmore in the 70’s???
What if Bram is James/Juliet’s OR James/Kate’s son???
Im probably WAYYY off but that is what I was wondering after the Ep.
I dont think they get off the island..
ps. whos bram? (i apologize if thats a stupid question)
We had to remove part of your comment because it contained info that some could consider spoilers.
may be wrong here, but I got the impression “shot in the leg” Locke was in 2007, and that he’d flashed forward at that point. That time with fit with Locke, Ben and Sun’s arrival to the island on Ajira 316.
I was thinking Locke was in 2007 too, since he was time shifting during that time. He got shot by Ethan and then time shifted to 2007 where Locke told Richard to say what he would say to him.
did you know it was 2007 the first time you saw Locke with bullet in leg and Richard? Or because of Follow the Leader episode version? thnx
Didn’t Eko burn the drug plane?? How is it still there in 2007?
“If whatever happened, happened then we’re losing a significant portion of the cast (Jack, Kate, Hurley, and Jin).” I think it’s far far more likely Richard just didn’t see what he thinks he saw.
Eko did burn the plane, but it didn’t disintegrate. It was mainly to burn his brother’s body in it anyway.
@herbtastic: I am with you. When he got shot by Ethan, the plane was still up top. When he fell and jumped in time, he traveled to 2007 where the plane was already down on it’s back, and burned. So it is after Eko burned the plane, and that means it is after the Flight 815 has crashed. Therefore it makes sense.
@BigJay: Yes Eko burned the plane. Hence the plane is all charred. And it is still there because the plane wasn’t make out of wood and paper.
FYI - We removed your reply to MikeRex since it contained details surrounding next week’s episode that could be considered spoilers.
■Yet another mention of Richard’s agelessness, this time by Ben. Ben also referred to Richard as an “advisor”. Many people have surmised that Richard was originally part of the Black Rock crew (if he’s not tied to the ancient Egyptian influences). We saw him working on what appeared to be a model of the Black Rock ship. Could this be a hint?
I like Richard having ties to Egyptian influences much better than him being a part of the Black Rock. Mostly just because of his eye liner, but the way Ben said he had been there a “looong” time makes me believe it is more than 150 or so years. For whatever reason, Richard buliding the ship in the bottle struck me as him playing God (think having the ship trapped) and not as an homage to the ship he came in on.
A friend gave me her theory that Richard is also from the future (and can time travel, or is in a state of perpetual motion with the island) and that’s why he isn’t aging, because only those who are in their true present age and those who have come from a different time period do not age.
He does not ACTUALLY have eye liner. His eye lashes are just really thick and dark.
no its eyeliner….
No, it’s really his eyelashes believe it or not. I know, I wasn’t sure either until I looked up images of him in previous roles.
This is from 2001:

Oh & also, here’s a snippet from an interview where he directly addresses the whole Guyliner assumption:
“At the TV Critics Association press tour, some reporters asked if you wore eyeliner, which Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse denied. What do you think of this?”
Carbonell: “My brother sent me this link about the TCA, where you guys were at. Someone had asked about whether I was wearing eyeliner. I think Carlton came to my defense, and he said, “He’s 100 percent sans makeup” or something like that. I could see why some people would think I have eyeliner on because [my eyelashes] are dark. Especially the bottom row, they’re pretty dark. I’ve been dealing with it since I was a little kid, and so to me it’s very funny when it comes up, especially at TCA. My brother told me to look online and sort of Google something about that, and my name came up as a couple things. One of them was Maybelline Man. I’ve been dubbed by some people as Guyliner. It’s very amusing.”
Whew! That’s it, the end, no more — confirmed by the actor himself: he does not wear eyeliner. He merely has very VERY black eyelashes. (I have to say I snorted at “Maybelline Man! lol)
Now that’s not to say he wasn’t hired for the role of Richard Alpert specifically because it LOOKS like he has black eyeliner on. It does tend to give him a more “Egyptian” look. But I guess you’d have ask ‘Darlton’ about that…..

What if Richard came to the island on Black Rock but died or was dead when Black Rock wrecked and anyone who is resurrected does not age? Just a thought no evidence I can think of to support it.
@AndrewB: I also like the idea of Richard being from the Egyptian period. I think it would give the story more substance.
“We’ll by Microsoft” could be better for the COW :/
BEST QUOTE OF THE EPISODE: “Ok, dude. We’re from the future” - Hurley
Absolutely! Hurley just couldn’t keep up with Dr. Chang’s questions, even denying that there was a Korean War. His admission was priceless!
I’m a lurker, but had to post when I enlarged image 03-notebook. Don’t tell me that actually says “OBAMA”. Maybe it’s just a little inside joke, but please…
I noticed that last night and was debating mentioning it. If that’s what it says, it got to be a Darlton inside joke. It would remind me of the Obama: Four More Years t-shirt that Carlton wore in the S4 DVD special features.
that sub is so bad, it’s so fake
Yeah, agreed. Sometimes the CGI is so-so, and of course, sometimes it is so great I don’t even notice it. But the first thing everyone in my family said when they saw the sub was, “Oh man, that is so fake looking.”
Sort of reminds me of when I see Kate… there’s no way that’s a real person… it’s too perfect!
Chris
Has any one noticed that DeGroots is an anagram for = Store God, perhaps Jacob is being ’stored’ with the ash/metellic like substance keeping him in place?? Hence the “please help me” commment in the earlier show. I think something or someone is being held against their will by Richard/Ben and that is why they are worried about John.
I realize it’s plural - but since there were 2? Just a wild thought I thought I’d throw out there!
Love LOST!!
