LOST Episode 5×13 “Some Like it Hoth” - Screencaps, Easter Eggs, Audio, & Analysis

Good episode tonight. Nothing too earth shattering, but it was nice to finally fill in Miles’ storyline. We also enjoyed the banter between Miles and Hurley.  Leave us your thoughts at 920-626-6086 for inclusion in the podcast. On to our thoughts:

  • Recalling that Miles said he was from Reseda, I was waiting for young Miles to stumble upon Mr. Miyagi fixing Daniel LaRusso’s bike at the apartment complex.  For those of you who don’t know what the hell I’m talking about, you’ll have to brush up on your Karate Kid trivia.
  • After getting a taste of the Miles and Hurley pairing in Whatever Happened, Happened, I really enjoyed the pairing in this episode.  Their discussions generated most of the Get Lost COW (clip of the week) nominees.  Pretty funny stuff.
  • I can’t take the phrase “circle of trust” seriously after Meet the Parents.
  • The abundance of Star Wars references, all the way up to the episode title, were brilliant.  The writers must have been sucking up to Damon.
  • It was no surprise that Miles was Pierre Chang’s son.  Back after 5×04 The Little Prince we had a poll asking whether or not you thought that Chang was Miles’ father and over 90% of voters said yes.
  • It was funny watching Hurley squirm just a bit when one of the Swan builders was reading off the numbers.
  • We were treated to a new bit of intrigue last week with Ilana’s “What lies in the shadow of the statue?” question.  We saw in this episode that the goon who was with her on the beach, Bram, tried to redirect Miles from joining Widmore’s science team and asked Miles that same question.  It’s also noteworthy that this exchange took place back in 2004, so this new team has been in place for some time now.  Bram also hints at this “war” that we’ve heard about and that he believes Miles in going to be on the wrong team.  So, whose team is Bram on?  Vote below in our poll.  Popular choices include DHARMA and Ben.  DHARMA seems to make sense, but who knows.
  • I have a suspicion that Chang didn’t abandon or discard Miles and his mother like his mother made it sound.  Instead, I think getting them off the island will be some sort of precautionary measure to keep them safe.  I don’t have much of a basis for this other than a hunch predicated on the way Chang reacted to and played with baby Miles as older Miles looked on from a distance.
  • Once again, we got a not so subtle hint about the Egyptian influences on the island.  The chalkboard in the classroom was littered with history on Egyptian language.  My guess is that we’ll continue to get more Egyptian tie-ins yet this season.
  • Kate is an idiot for the way she handled Roger Linus.  I’m not sure what part of laying low she doesn’t understand.  Sigh…
  • News flash: Juliet is still hot.
  • LaFleur and our other Losties just might be screwed at this point after Phil saw the security tape and LaFleur subsequently knocked him out.  Will LaFleur be able to work his con man magic or is the cover finally blown?
  • Once I heard there were scientists from Ann Arbor coming in on the sub, I was a bit disappointed when it wasn’t the DeGroots.  Don’t get me wrong, I love Daniel, but it would’ve been great to finally get an “in person” look at the DeGroots.

It does seem a bit weird that Kate attracts too much of Ben’s father attention, but I believe that two features in her character drive her to do it: 1) She was a mother for a couple of years and knows the pain of loosing your child (kinda) 2) she’s attracted to Roger because he resembles very much Sawyer in the first couple of seasons, I wouldn’t be surprised if they copied a whole set of reactions.

    • dang says:

Roger resembles Sawyer? Uh… dude…. time to get your glasses checked. Beyond the fact they’re both white men with stubble, the two look nothing alike. At all. Not even a little.

      • dude says:

sawyer and roger’s CHARACTER’s are similar. NOT what they LOOK LIKE. It’s completely apparent.
Roger is very similar to Kate’s biological father (an abusive drunk). And we already learned that Sawyer reminded Kate of her biological father in the second season.

        • dang says:

Sorry dude, but I see no similarities in CHARACTER between Roger and Sawyer either and I don’t believe there are any implied by the show (can you can do better than just asserting “it’s completely apparent”?).

I think it’s pretty obvious that Kate comforts Roger because she personally is responsible for what’s bothering him (she was the one who took his kid from the infirmary), she knows this is going to alter the course of Ben’s life (making him an other) and she knows it’s her friends that were responsible for the original predicament Ben was in (Sayid shot him, Jack refused to save him).

Not to mention, I don’t believe there’s any evidence that Kate knows Roger is abusive to Ben (Sayid knew, but he ran away before he could have told anyone). Of course everyone is entitled to their own opinion but I just don’t see any evidence for your assertions in the show.

          • james says:

I agree with the original poster about minor nods of comparison being drawn towards Roger and old Sawyer all of which Kate has an attraction. Even Roger’s resemblance is similar. I don’t think it’s physical at all.

I also agree there are other factors such as her role in the situation and her lifestyle in the past 3 years.

          • satire24 says:

I agree that Kate is drawn to Roger, but I think it’s more that he reminds her of her dad more than of Sawyer. I don’t think this is a conscious thought on her part, and I don’t think it’s a sexual attraction, either.

  3. Pharaoman says:

    Nice Podcast!
    One Minus:
I missed the tongue-twister from Hurley in your poll!
“Dude theres a body bag back here with a body in it”, its just awsome!

  4. Lisa says:

I thought it was a great episode last night. Like most people I did wonder if Dr. Chang’s baby boy was Miles. I guess Miles’ mother told him that his father abandoned them because she didn’t want Miles to go looking for him. I guess there was just too much to his dying that she couldn’t let him know. So, she simply said he abandoned them.

The back and forth between Hurley and Miles was hilarious, although Hurley did make a mistake in his Empire Strikes Back analogy of Luke and Vader compared to Miles and Pierre. Hurley said that Luke couldn’t accept that Vader was his father and ended up losing his hand. Luke lost his hand before Vader told him he was his father. It was funny that he was “writing” Empire Strikes Back and more funny when Miles started reading it out loud (Rarrrrr). When I saw the word “Hoth” in the episode, I immediately thought of Empire knowing that was the name of the ice planet they started out on.

I’m glad you caught that Bram was the same guy on the Hydra island. I totally missed that. I also hadn’t thought of him and Ilana as being with Dharma, but I’m not so sure about that. I’m wondering more if they’re with Ben because their sentence, “What lies in the shadow of the statue” sounds like they have a more intimate connection to the island, like they are “Others”. But, you may be right, maybe Dharma has something hidden in the shadow of the statue.

As for Kate’s trying to comfort Roger, I don’t think she realized Roger was going to react the way he did. Up until that point, they seemed to get along fine. Kate finally saw the real Roger in his reaction though. The real Roger that little Ben had been dealing with all this time.

It will be interesting to see what Sawyer (LeFluer) does with Phil. It’s getting harder and harder for them to keep their cover. We’ll see if one of them is taken on a trip to Oldham for another dose of truth serim.

Can’t wait for episode 100 two weeks from now!!

  5. Dave says:

Who was the body used in the test Naomi gave to Miles?

    • dang says:

Evidently he’s the guy who secured all of the bodies for the fake 815 that was planted at the bottom of the ocean and found at the beginning of S4 (the Captain of the Kahana said Widmore was behind it, but that’s still debatable). We haven’t seen that guy before…. if that’s what you were wondering.

      • Kate says:

I have not seen this anywhere, but why is everyone assuming that because this man (the dead man Naomi brought Miles to) worked for Widmore? He was bringing him the pictures & documents regarding the fake wreakage of 815 but what if he obtained those pix & docs from the real mastermind behind the cover-up, whomever that may be! My guess, Ben

        • Dave says:

I agree. I don’t think it’s clear at all yet who’s responsible for the fake 815. I just thought the face on the dead guy looked familiar and wondered if he’d been seen in the show before.

          • dang says:

The recent “Story of the Oceanic 6″ clipshow that aired this week (the week after “Some Like it Hoth”) clearly stated that Charles Widmore put the fake plane at the bottom of the Ocean. It was stated in unequivocal terms. You can confirm this through Lostpedia if you’d like.

  6. Shawno Nevo says:

I was wondering, why do you guys lie and say that your podcast came out on the 14th when it wasn’t posted until the 15th? Posting a podcast on Wednesday morning is worthless.

    • Jeremy says:

It was recorded on the 14th. If you feel posting on Wednesday morning is worthless, then I suppose I’m glad no one is making you listen. I mean, seriously, this is a hobby. We’re not professional bloggers or podcasters. We’re doing this for fun on our own time. Do I wish we got the show out sooner? Sure, but when life intervenes, recording the show doesn’t always make the short list.

      • Shawno Nevo says:

You guys sell T-shirts about your podcast. You expect someone to pay 15 dollars for a shirt about a podcast that isn’t released until the morning of the new episode? Take some pride in your site and your work. You work really hard on those screencaps, if you spent half the time on recording you could have the podcast out that night.

        • Lock-Jesus says:

Wow, if you think this is such a bad podcast why do still come here. Quit acting like a douche, they do this because they love doing it. You try running a website that about 100,000 people depend on and balance a normal life.

          • Shawno Nevo says:

I didn’t say anything that wasn’t true. If you run a podcast and try to sell shirts to people, you should take some pride in your work.

  7. Json says:

It is just me or does that periodic chart in the classroom have way too many elements on it?? It is difficult to tell, but it looks like they have names all the way through to #112. Forget 1970, current 2009 charts only have names up to 111 (Roentgenium). I’m pretty sure that all of the elements above 104 weren’t even discovered until the mid 1980’s

    • Sinca says:

there are 77 elements on the board the same amount that were discovered in 1977

      • Json says:

No way. For one thing Gold is #79. Also you can clearly see the actinide series listed which is 89-103
I am almost 100% sure that there is a full description on that chart for Seaborgium (#106) and Bohrium (#107), but on further checking they were both isolated in 1974-1976. But there is also an element listed below Lead and one below Polonium and neither of these elements were isolated prior to 1987.

My real question was whether the chart was a) chosen to show 1977 era knowledge b) if it was just a prop that wasn’t exact, but was close enough or c) it was a subtle hint the Dharma people had scientific knowledge far beyond that of 1977.

        • Mamuzquiz says:

I was about to post something about it. I noticed that there were special elements specially marked. Maybe the DI school tough children about the importance of specific elements due to the Island’s nature.
Maybe it can be something about time. Elements with the highest number exist in the real world for fractions of seconds. Maybe there, where time seems different, those elements are more stable.

  8. shazy says:

    hi

does anyone remember the ep where ben and miles were in when miles first got here and he mentioned 3.2 to him, i cant remember bens response but maybe bram and co are with ben

  9. Aaron says:

Because I believe what ever happened, happened, I am choosing to subscribe to the thought that Hurley wrote Empire Strikes Back all along and that the improvements he tried to put in ended up getting cut by Mr. Lucas. This would explain why Empires Strikes Back was so amazing while Episode I, II and III where fails. Too bad Hurley didn’t prevent Lucas from writing those epic let down prequels.

  10. Aaron says:

Ceaser is out and Bram is in:
Ok So Bram and Ilana don’t work for Widmore! One down a few more to go: So my other possible employers are:
    1) Ben: We know form Jill the butcher and his layer guy that Ben people working for him/the others off the island.
    2) The Hanzo Foundation: They funded the DI showing they have an interest in the Island. I feel like the grandson of Magnus Hanso (the Captain of the Black Rock) could know the answer to “What lies in the shadow of the statue?”
    3) The Dharma Initiative: Other then taking Miles up on paying him double what Widmore promised him they offer to give him answers about his father who worked for the DI.

    Sawyer powned Phil
So things are coming unraveled after 3 years of lying. Miles never got to erase the tape like he was supposed to because Horrace had to bring him into his “circle of trust” and send him on coroner duty.
I know it seemed stupid of Phil to try to talk it out with Sawyer but it is hard to realize that they have been working together for 3 years. The 815ers were only together for about 100 days.

Faraday didnt bother to shave when he left the island
It did not really surprise me that Faraday was one of the scientists from Ann Arbor(Where the DI are based). After all the open scene of this season showed us Faraday in a DI jumpsuit when they were trying to dig out the Frozen Donkey Wheel. I think Miles’s surprise was nothing more than they fact that he just wasn’t expecting him at that time.

    Naomi is I moan backwards
She looked really hot. Too bad she only lasted two or three episodes. Hopefully we will see here again whenever Faraday has gets his flashback episode.

  11. Rachel says:

    Loved this episode!

    A couple of things:

    1) Maybe big Miles is the reason that little Miles and his mom get off the island. Just like with Daniel Faraday telling Charlotte to never come back to the island … when things get out of control and they begin to realize that the purge might be getting near Miles convinces his father to send them away. Maybe?

    2) What lies in the shadow of the statue … Jughead? Maybe the new people are people that are working for the nuclear side of things. Maybe even Daniel Faraday tipping them off?

  12. Hanan says:

    Hi Everyone.

Damon and Carlton code named the season finale “The fork in the outlet.” Did you notice one of the graphs on the chalkboard under the words “Wrings of the word of God” has something looking like a fork and an outlet? I wrote this and some other stuff on my blog: http://thelosthangover.blogspot.com.

    Love this site. Great job

  13. imlostednow101 says:

lol i’m suprised that no one has said this yet. If you look at he journal that Hurley is writing in, you can see an apple on the dharma symbol. haha as in an Apple Notebook

    • Lock-Jesus says:

It’s the schools DHARMA logo. If we look at “The man behind the curtain” one of Ben’s flashbacks is to his school days where you will probably see it

  14. Lock-Jesus says:

I think Faraday has made direct contact with the Degroots and may even be posing as him. Also It is possible that right now (316) that Hanso is sending Ilana to recreated the Dharma initiative. I just rewatched the episode where Hurley stumbles upon the Cabin and a dog howl is heard. I think that has something to do with the Anubis (Jackal dog) statue and glyph in the cerberus vent from dead is dead

  15. james says:

Jack makes a minor but significant contribution in this episode. His actions are, perhaps, foreshadowing his return to leadership. He doesn’t submit to Roger but he asserts himself against Roger and then tells James and Juliet of his actions. Then he leaves without being told by James or Juliet but before doing so he returns his cup to Juliet. All of these actions are a nice nod towards Jack’s past dominant role and what many speculate to be his future return to leadership.

  16. Vance says:

Why are the cleaning supplies in the classroom marked with the Swan logo when the station itself hasn’t even been finished at that point?

  17. Shawno Nevo says:

It’s been 14 days, well 15 if you count the fact that you lied about the day you released your last podcast, and still no new one. You guys suck. Might as well just stop calling this a PODCAST and start calling this a Lost Blog with pictures.
