As expected, fantastic episode. A lot to ponder.  Eric brought up a great point that it’s actually kind of devastating watching it through a second time when you think of the 30 years of heartbreak that Eloise and (probably to a lesser extent) Widmore had to go through knowing they were marching their son toward his death. Leave us your thoughts at 920-626-6086 for inclusion in the podcast.  On to our thoughts:

  • It looks like we can begin to piece things together regarding Hawking and Widmore’s “supervision” of Desmond (and Faraday for that matter).  Assuming they were given a “download” of information from either Farday’s notebook or some of the Losties (perhaps in exchange for getting the Losties back to 2007), it makes sense that they would steer him through life to make sure that he eventually ended up on the island.  This presumes that they know much of what is going to happen and they want it to happen and that they believe in free will.  Otherwise, perhaps they’d just fall into the ‘whatever happened, happened’ camp.  Widmore also spoke of having to “sacrifice” his relathionship with Penny, which tells me he had to do that to keep the intended path moving forward.  Also, I always thought Hawking believed in free will after she freaked out on Desmond in 3×08 Flashes Before Your Eyes when he wants the ring.  It’s either that or she’s been told that Desmond is uniquely and miraculously special, which brings me to…
  • How does Farady know that the rules don’t apply to Desmond?  Was it their conversation over the radio in 4×05 The Constant and the fallout from the Failsafe Key?  Plus, does he now believe that everyone has a similar ability to exercise free will like he seemed to be stating upon his return to the island?
  • Learning of how Widmore (through Hawking) had all of this future information in the past and how it seems he used it to shape how he acted in the future makes me really wonder if he’s really a bad guy or if he’s really just kind of stuck with having to carry out the master plan to get us to some future result.
  • So, Widmore is Faraday’s father after all, which in turn makes Daniel and Penny half siblings.  We speculated about that after 5×03 Jughead and ran a poll about it.  56% of almost 2500 respondents thought Widmore was NOT Faraday’s father.  This has been one of the few times when the popular opinion has been wrong.
  • I loved Faraday outing Miles as Chang’s kid.  Hopefully it will spur them on to future conversations.
  • Hawking told Desmond in 5×06 316 that the island wasn’t done with him yet.  If she’s truly at the point where she now doesn’t know what’s going to happen in the future (as she told Penny), then how did she know this?
  • Faraday getting killed sucked, especially when you realized it was by his own mother.
  • We should probably assume Farady is older than 30 in 2007 just based on his looks, but wouldn’t it be interesting if Widmore and Hawking chose to have Daniel only after having seen him in 1977.
  • So if Faraday kicked the bucket, then who was the mysterious voice we heard behind the camera in the Comic-Con video where Chang is making his plea for the re-constitution of the DHARMA Initiative (thanks Aaron for the heads up)?  It wouldn’t seem that they would’ve had time to film it together.  Perhaps Miles gave him the information, but it doesn’t seem to be Miles’ voice (he calls him Pierre as well, which Miles wouldn’t do).

Good episode tonight. Nothing too earth shattering, but it was nice to finally fill in Miles’ storyline. We also enjoyed the banter between Miles and Hurley.  Leave us your thoughts at 920-626-6086 for inclusion in the podcast. On to our thoughts:

  • Recalling that Miles said he was from Reseda, I was waiting for young Miles to stumble upon Mr. Miyagi fixing Daniel LaRusso’s bike at the apartment complex.  For those of you who don’t know what the hell I’m talking about, you’ll have to brush up on your Karate Kid trivia.
  • After getting a taste of the Miles and Hurley pairing in Whatever Happened, Happened, I really enjoyed the pairing in this episode.  Their discussions generated most of the Get Lost COW (clip of the week) nominees.  Pretty funny stuff.
  • I can’t take the phrase “circle of trust” seriously after Meet the Parents.
  • The abundance of Star Wars references, all the way up to the episode title, were brilliant.  The writers must have been sucking up to Damon.
  • It was no surprise that Miles was Pierre Chang’s son.  Back after 5×04 The Little Prince we had a poll asking whether or not you thought that Chang was Miles’ father and over 90% of voters said yes.
  • It was funny watching Hurley squirm just a bit when one of the Swan builders was reading off the numbers.
  • We were treated to a new bit of intrigue last week with Ilana’s “What lies in the shadow of the statue?” question.  We saw in this episode that the goon who was with her on the beach, Bram, tried to redirect Miles from joining Widmore’s science team and asked Miles that same question.  It’s also noteworthy that this exchange took place back in 2004, so this new team has been in place for some time now.  Bram also hints at this “war” that we’ve heard about and that he believes Miles in going to be on the wrong team.  So, whose team is Bram on?  Vote below in our poll.  Popular choices include DHARMA and Ben.  DHARMA seems to make sense, but who knows.
  • I have a suspicion that Chang didn’t abandon or discard Miles and his mother like his mother made it sound.  Instead, I think getting them off the island will be some sort of precautionary measure to keep them safe.  I don’t have much of a basis for this other than a hunch predicated on the way Chang reacted to and played with baby Miles as older Miles looked on from a distance.
  • Once again, we got a not so subtle hint about the Egyptian influences on the island.  The chalkboard in the classroom was littered with history on Egyptian language.  My guess is that we’ll continue to get more Egyptian tie-ins yet this season.
  • Kate is an idiot for the way she handled Roger Linus.  I’m not sure what part of laying low she doesn’t understand.  Sigh…
  • News flash: Juliet is still hot.
  • LaFleur and our other Losties just might be screwed at this point after Phil saw the security tape and LaFleur subsequently knocked him out.  Will LaFleur be able to work his con man magic or is the cover finally blown?
  • Once I heard there were scientists from Ann Arbor coming in on the sub, I was a bit disappointed when it wasn’t the DeGroots.  Don’t get me wrong, I love Daniel, but it would’ve been great to finally get an “in person” look at the DeGroots.

LOST Episode 5×12 “Dead is Dead” - Screencaps, Easter Eggs, Audio, & Analysis

April 8, 2009

As predicted last week, this will be the hands down choice for episode of the season (at least so far).  Unbelievable.  Leave us your thoughts at 920-626-6086 for inclusion into the podcast.  Our thoughts are below, but make sure to leave your thoughts in the Comments:

  • We can pretty much confirm now that Widmore (for the most part) was telling Locke the truth about being the leader of the Others for over 3 decades until being exiled.
  • In trying to put some dates to these events, it gets a bit hairy.  Alex was born and stolen in 1988.  When Widmore is banished, we see Alex swinging with Ben and she appears to be somewhere around 6 years old.  It is obviously post Purge (which happened in 1992) since the Others are living in the barracks.  This would put Widmore’s exile at about 1994.  The part that’s a bit strange is that Widmore says he’s been trying to get back to the island for 20 years even though it’s now 2007, or 13 years after he was banished.  Perhaps he was just using round numbers.
  • Ben getting Caesar airborn was priceless.  Nothing like a double barrel shotgun blast from short range.  I was happy to see Caesar go as I didn’t care his character very much.  His storyline seemed a bit pointless.
  • It’s been made even more clear that Jacob is calling the shots on the island.  All people need to hear to fall in line on something is that Jacob wanted it so.
  • Ilana’s question to Frank, “What lies in the shadow of the statue?” was a very intriguing question indeed.  Her character became infinitely more interesting, as it now appears that she may have some sort of tie to the history of the island if we assume that the statue she speaks of is indeed our favorite four toed statue.  Does she work for Widmore?  The fact that she knew about Peter Avellino and that Ben told Sayid they were knocking off members of Widmore’s organization would give her a tie to Widmore, not to mention the tie-in to the statue and the island’s history.
  • What’s in the large crate that Ilana and crew were messing with (a couple of the numbers were on the side of the crate as well; we need to get a screencap up for that yet)?  Accessing its contents would seem to be an integral part of their plan.  Could it somehow be tied to Jughead?  Just a wild theory / speculation.
  • It also looks promising (based on the presence of the outrigger left on Hydra Island and the Ajira water bottles that were not-so-discretely flashed in front of us) that Ilana’s crew are going to be the ones chasing our former-time-jumping Losties in the outriggers, so it’ll be cool to see which one Juliet takes out.
  • As we’ve seen in previous encounters (Yemi, for example), it appears Smokey can take on the form of a human to deliver a message.  After reading Ben’s mind and judging him, Smokey morphed into Alex in order to scare Ben straight and get the point across that Locke was ultra important and that was not to hurt him, but instead listen to and help him.  I honestly think Ben’s going to heed Smokey’s advice and become one of John’s “disciples”, but we’ll see.
  • Speaking of Locke, as I hinted at, it looks like Widmore was correct (from 5×07; Locke: Why do you think I’m so special?  Widmore: You just are.) in that John is critically important to the island and probably the end game of the show.  The island chooses who or what it wants and people seem to fall in line with that.
  • Is the war that’s coming going to involve Ilana and her people against Locke?  Is said war the same scenario Walt was explaining to Locke back in 5×07 when they met up in NYC?  If Ilana is working for Widmore, this wouldn’t necessarily seem to make sense that she’d be trying to hurt Locke after Widmore’s handling of him…unless Widmore was lying to Locke.  Widmore told him that if he (Locke) wasn’t on the island, that the wrong team was going to win the war.  Does Widmore secretly think he’s ensuring that his team (which would be the opposing team to Locke’s team under this scenario) will win if Locke is there?  Enough on that one, my brain hurts.
  • It was a bummer to not see Ellie in the island flashback scenes.  She should have still been there in 1977, when we first saw Widmore with young Ben, but perhaps she had left the island by the time the more recent flashbacks had occurred (1988 for the heist of Alex and around 1994 for Widmore’s exile)?
  • When Smokey judged Ben, did it not destroy him there because the island truly did want Alex dead, meaning Ben had not “disobeyed” by his part in her death?  Charles had already indicated that the island wanted Rousseau (and subsequently Alex) dead and Ben seemed to defy the order at that point.  I’m just wondering what would have happened to Ben if he had done everything he could to keep Alex alive.  Would Smokey have judged him differently?
  • It’s no secret that I have an affinity for Des and Penny, so I’ve been nervous since 5×07 that Ben may have taken out either or both of them, not to mention little Charlie.  Then when Ben told Locke to apologize to Desmond, I really got tense.  Needless to say, I was happy to see Des beat the piss of Ben.  One thing that I can’t seem to get out of my mind, though, is that we never really saw the connecting scene where Ben gets out of the water and calls Jack…which would keep the door open just a crack to the idea that what if Ben still somehow managed to gather his bearings and make another run at Penny (Des is safe based on Ben’s comment to Locke).  I’m sure I’m just being a worry wart, but hey, it’s Lost and you can never be comfortable.
  • The game of Risk we saw set up in the barracks indicates that we’re not dealing with an alternate timeline version of 2007.  Back in 2004 (pre time jumping by our Losties) when the Losties were living in the barracks (before Keamy’s team invaded), Sawyer and Hurley were playing that same Risk game and it appears to be set up the same way (see 4×09 The Shape of Things to Come) in 2007.  This leads me to believe that the version of 2007 we’re seeing is an extension of the version of 2004 we saw before all the time jumping occurred.

Easter Eggs:

After we saw the four toed statue in LaFleur, we suggested Anubis as one of the choices for the statue.  This hieroglyph looks a hell of a lot like Anubis…

Here are a few images of Anubis as a reference…

LOST Episode 5×11 “Whatever Happened, Happened” - Screencaps, Easter Eggs, Audio, & Analysis

April 1, 2009

When we first heard this was a Kate centric episode, we weren’t thrilled.  However, despite already getting what seemed like 37 Kate flashbacks over the course of the series, we were curious to tie up Kate’s loose ends regarding  Aaron and what she was doing for Sawyer off the island, so we’re glad to have gotten those scenes.  Overall, we liked the episode and really enjoyed a few particular scenes.  Before reading our thoughts on the rest of the episode, leave us your thoughts at 920-626-6086.  OK, on to our thoughts:

  • Our favorite scenes of the episode did not include Kate (big surprise).  That honor instead goes to two scenes: the time travel chat between Miles (essentially serving as a proxy for Faraday) and Hurley and the Richard Alpert scene.  Let’s start with the time travel discussion.  We’ve come to know that episodes written by Darlton themselves are either massively important or contain specific details surrounding the show’s mythology and rules (particularly when it comes to time travel: Flashes Before Your Eyes, The Constant).  Tonight was no exception as we were enlightened to a few new rules of time travel.  We absolutely loved the Back to the Future reference.  I think we’ve used Back to the Future 3 or 4 times on the podcast (including our most recent episode — all hail Biff Tannen) as a point of comparison.  The first new thing we learned concretely was that despite our Losties being back in 1977, they can die because, from their point of view, their futures haven’t happened yet.  Contrarily, the lives of the rest of the people they encounter back in 1977 will always lead to the same place in the future because, as the episode title suggests, whatever happened (already) happened back in 1977.  Basically, every individual has his/her own timeline that contains a past, a present, and a future, no matter what year that past took place in or what year it is in the present.  That past will always remain unchanged.  That present and future are up for grabs.  That takes a minute to digest, but makes sense.  The other thing we learned concretely was that adult Ben won’t remember being shot by Sayid while he was young Ben.  Miles was confounded when Hurley confronted him on this topic, but we came to learn via Richard in our other favorite scene that Ben will lose this memory, along with his “innocence” apparently.  Plus, he’ll “never be the same”.  What exactly Ben does and does not remember remains to be seen.  In any event, it appears Richard’s cryptic comments are tied into the nature or mythology of the island and the Temple.  We also loved hearing Ellie’s and Charles’ names mentioned when one of the Others was talking to Richard.  This seems to somewhat validate Widmore’s claim that he was leading the Others and mostly in peace (i.e., the truce).  It also suggests that Ellie and Widmore had a long running history together.  We’re just not sure if it was as lovers, peers, or siblings (remember the discussion earlier this season over whether Widmore and Ellie were Faraday’s parents?).  Of note was the fact that Richard made it clear that he didn’t answer to them (Ellie and Charles).  We’re really looking forward to a continuation of this story line.
  • Speaking of Widmore and Ellie, by 1977, we’re getting to the point where Penny would be need to be born.  There are a number of possible scenarios here, including her being born on the island to them, her being born off the island to them where Ellie left the island to deliver her, Penny not really being their child, or if Widmore and Ellie are siblings then perhaps Widmore has a different love interest who gives birth to Penny.
  • It turns out our readers’ hunch was correct on what would happen with Aaron.  In our entry covering episode 5×06 316, 52% of respondents thought Kate would give Aaron to Carole Littleton, 22% thought she’d give him to Cassidy, and 18% thought he’d be kidnapped.  What’s funny is the show teased options 2 and 3 as well before settling on Carole Littleton.  Will Carole make a public stink about Claire being alive?  I would guess not knowing that Kate is going to look for her.
  • We found out that Sawyer’s whisper to Kate on the helicopter was, as many suspected, in relation to his daughter, Clementine.  It was nice to see her and Cassidy and know that Sawyer was making sure Clementine was taken care of, despite Cassidy’s continued bitterness toward him.
  • Kate’s purpose for coming back to the island is to find Claire.  I was glad to hear that her reasoning had nothing to do with Sawyer, even if deep down part of it does.  Giving Suliet an honest chance might be tough, though, when Claire isn’t even born yet in 1977.
  • Jack has become Locke, at least mentally.  He has no idea what he’s supposed to do next, but doesn’t seem to care.  He just knows that he was supposed to come back and he feels his path will become obvious at the right time.
  • A note about the bullet wound on Ben:  It appeared last week that the wound was on the left side of his chest near his heart and that this week it was on the other side of his chest.  Was this a continuity issue or something more?
  • Sayid must still be off in the jungle.
  • After a brief hiatus, it was nice to see Locke again.  Now let’s see if Ben somehow manages to screw him over…again.
  • Characters we miss: Desmond, Faraday, Ellie (Hawking), and Widmore
  • We’re still waiting on the payoff episode for Miles.  He really hasn’t put his ghostbuster skills to much use, so that’s got to be coming yet this season.
  • Based on the preview for next week’s episode, we’re going to predict that it’ll be one of the, if not the, favorite episodes this season.  We won’t comment on specifics for those who are sensitive to possible mild spoilers.
