LOST Episode 5×06 “316″ - Easter Eggs, Screencaps, Audio, and Analysis

February 19, 2009 by Jeremy

Another great episode this week. For me, it wasn’t quite as spectacular as last week, but great it it’s own right. Highlights:

  • They’re baaaaccccckkkkk!  Thankfully Darlton didn’t make it a season long trek back to the island. I like the way this storyline was handled, with the exception of finding out right away at the beginning of the episode that they had made it back. It took a bit of suspense out of the rest of the episode for me. Despite that minor grievance, the story arc back to the island was fairly quick and didn’t drag on. Yet, we were left with enough unanswered questions surrounding some of the O6’s motivation that we’ll still be looking forward to these details being filled in. For instance, who tipped off Hurley?  What’s the deal with Sayid?  What did Kate do with Aaron?
  • I liked the parallels between the first trip to the island and this redux.  Hawking encouraged this, as the results become “unpredictable” the less familiar the return trip conditions are.  What was interesting was that it appeared some of the roles changed this time around.  Ben played the role of Hurley feverishly trying to make the flight.  Hurley toted the guitar a la Charlie.  Sayid filled the convict role as he appeared to have an escort with him.  Then once Jack was back on the island, the similarities to the pilot episode were blatant.  See our comparison screen shots below.
  • I loved the mythology piece with Hawking. We finally got some answers surrounding why the island can’t be found easily. We got our first off-island DHARMA station, the Lamp Post, which uses electromagnetic energy to predict the comings and goings of the island.  It will be cool to see some of the other locations around the world that are connected via similar electromagnetic energy.  It would seem Tunisia is one while Uluru may be another.  And by the way, who’s the “fellow” that concocted this station in the first place?  A guess…Faraday.  Not sure the logistics make sense for that, but that’s who popped into my mind right away.
  • Seeing Linus showered in blood on the pay phone at the marina brought on a sense of dread.  The groundwork is laid for a confrontation between Des / Penny and Ben.  If you recall, Ben told Jack that he made a promise to an old friend and that he had a loose end to tie up.  That old friend just may be Charles Widmore and that promise just may be to kill Penny after Widmore changed the rules and allowed Alex to be executed.  You could argue that the marina would be a likely spot to find Des and Penny, seeing how they live on a boat, but logistically, the path from England doesn’t conveniently end in California.  I’m very worried for Penny right now.
  • I loved the “leap of faith” comment from Hawking to Jack as Locke had uttered those same word’s in Season 2’s Man of Science, Man of Faith.
  • It seems like we need to be focused on the concepts of Resurrection and Reincarnation.  Ben elaborated on Jesus’ resurrection to Jack and how everyone is convinced eventually.  These concepts are in play as we find out what happens to Locke as his body returns to the island.
  • Oh, so that’s why Christian had white shoes…
  • Was Locke basically blaming Jack for him having to die?  It sure seemed like it.  Essentially he was saying that he wouldn’t have needed to die if Jack and others had never left the island, which Locke had told them that they weren’t supposed to.
  • Jin appears to be entrenched into the Dharma Intiative as was Faraday as we saw earlier this season.  My hunch is that everyone is going to be stuck in that time frame right now and will have to work to be able to get…back to the future.

Here’s a comparison of Jack at beginning of the pilot episode and upon his return to the island in this episode…

    you’re forgetting the obvious
    John 3:16
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.
John telling Jack he wished he believed in him. The bit about Jesus and Thomas and the resurrection. They will live forever if they believe in the island.

  2. Craig says:

The date on the photo in the Lamp Post (09.23.54) is 50 years to the day from the O815 crash (09.22.04)

From what we’ve seen it looks like a lot of the characters have been on the island before, even if they dont remember it. Maybe Jin working for Dharma was one of these instances. Faraday had been there before and didnt remember talking to his love (can’t remember her name) when she was little

Amy, At the end of “This Place is Death” we saw Locke turn the Frozen Donkey Wheel (FDW) and I think that put the Lefties (those left behind – Jin, Sawyer, Dan, Juliet, and Miles) in a time that is months before the current time (when the Oceanic 5 returned), during which the Lefties had enough time to assimilated into Dharma. They are obviously pre-Purge so I’m thinking that when Locke turned the FDW the Lefties flashed to when Ben was about 10 or 12. I think the ‘flash’ on the plane was a plane-only event and did not affect the people on the island. That is why we see Jin in a DHARMA van and jumpsuit…seemingly working for them now! I dont think they have been to the island before, they flashed when Locke turned the wheel to the easrly days in Dharma!

  4. Does Ben reading Ulysses brings anything back to your minds? The Directors are playing with the idea of a heroe finally coming back home. The Odyssey, anyone? Ulysses is Odysseus, Odysseus is renowned for his guile and resourcefulness, and is hence known by the epithet Odysseus the Cunning.

He is most famous for the ten eventful years he took to return home after the ten-year Trojan War.

There seems to be a connection down there, maybe I´m just crazy. Or lost.

  5. Dave says:

i’m thinking that, all thing being somewhat similar to the orignial circumstances and the fact that there have been hints dropped about john being resurrected or just not being completely dead, locke will take over the role that christian shepard has- not jacob per se, but jacob’s proxy.

  6. Deborah says:

I believe Aaron is with Sun’s daughter Li Jeon and Sun’s mother.

  7. Rachel says:

The chances of Kate leaving Aaron with Karen Littleton seem slim to none, since the only time she has ever had any real contact with her was at the memorial service for Christian Shepherd. Blood relation or not, Karen isn’t aware of Aaron’s surival and Kate wouldn’t have left him with someone she didn’t trust. Her mother was sick/dying last we saw her and therefore in no condition to take care of a child. Cassidy seems to be the most logical possibility at this point. Someone that Kate trusts, and as far as we are aware no one knows about the Kate/Cassidy connection so its the safest place for Aaron.

  8. Rebecca says:

The fact that Kate was so adamant that Jack never even mention Aaron again leads me to believe something ugly happened. The best possibility would be that Aaron is with his grandmother, which while it might devastate wanna-mama Kate, would be in my opinion what Claire would have wanted and not a bad thing for Aaron. The fact that Jack didn’t even question this, after the week before he gave that whole “Aaron’s my family too” and last season’s “your not even related to him” speech is just another notch on the belt of their ridiculous relationship.
Personally, I have always hated Jack, since the beginning he’s had no sense of humor. Sawyer has kept me in stiches and if he really wants Kate, I’d wish him luck, although I think its pretty clear that love triangle needs to move on. When Jack stopped “making sense” somewhere around the first flash forward, he began his redemption with me. And this week when he put those shoes on Locke and said “Where ever you are your probably laughing your ass off!” he was then redeemed in my opinion. I wish it got more votes for COW Frank Lapidus’ line was also funny but in my opinion the events/years of stubborn denial that precipitated Jack’s shoe speech make it priceless!

  9. brent says:

Has anyone done a comparison of the differences between the first scene and the last? They’re probably the same occasion, but not for sure - I noticed the dialogue between Jack and Kate is a little different each time.
