LOST Episode 5×07 “The Life and Death of Jeremy Bentham” - Screencaps, Easter Eggs, and Analysis

February 26, 2009

Overall, this was one of the weakest episodes this season.  The beginning and end of the episode were cool, but the middle seemed a bit hollow.  Thoughts:

  • Call in your thoughts on this episode to 920-626-6086.
  • Here’s to hoping that Caesar and Illana don’t end up being another Nikki and Paolo.  The jury’s still out.
  • Loved the scene with Widmore.  We started to fill in a few more details around Widmore’s history on the island (he was the leader, Ben tricked him off the island and exiled him, etc.).  I also loved his comment about the impending war that’s going to take place.  It seems it’ll be an epic struggle of good vs. evil and Ben vs. Widmore, but who’s the good and who’s evil?
  • Great to see Abaddon again, albeit his stay will apparently be short lived, literally.  So, as it turns out, he did work for Widmore and he did steer John towards Flight 815, something that may have been consistent with any number of our Losties.  So who has the keys to the future and knows what all is going to happen and to whom?  Who knew that our Losties had to be on Flight 815 and how did they know?  Similar question applies to Desmond and how Hawking knew that the island wasn’t done with him.  Are we going to have a similar jump from some future time to some past time where the folks from the future can tell the folks in the past what needs to happen?
  • Most of Locke’s visits with the O6 were boring and uneventful.  The best part was watching Abaddon heckle Locke after each unsuccessful recruiting attempt.
  • Are we done with Walt’s story?  I got the vibe that Locke was basically letting him go (”he’s been through enough” or something like that).  I’m holding onto a glimmer of hope that Walt is still relevant based on his premonitions of Locke, but it just appeared that Locke was content to wish Walt a happy life.  After the amount of focus on Walt for the first 2 seasons (he’s special, we got more than we bargained for, etc.), it’d be a shame for his story to just fade away.  Hell, I can’t believe it’s that tough to drag Malcolm David Kelley away from Chicken Nugget commercials.
  • It appears our hunch will be correct that the O6 or other members of Flight 316 will be the ones chasing Sawyer and crew in the outriggers.
  • What about Ms. Hawking caused Ben to turn on a dime and go from saving Locke to killing him?  Apparently Ben could not allow that meeting to take place.  That twist at the end of the episode was a nice one.

Our favorite Easter Eggs from the episode:

LOST Episode 5×06 “316″ - Easter Eggs, Screencaps, Audio, and Analysis

February 19, 2009

Another great episode this week. For me, it wasn’t quite as spectacular as last week, but great it it’s own right. Highlights:

  • They’re baaaaccccckkkkk!  Thankfully Darlton didn’t make it a season long trek back to the island. I like the way this storyline was handled, with the exception of finding out right away at the beginning of the episode that they had made it back. It took a bit of suspense out of the rest of the episode for me. Despite that minor grievance, the story arc back to the island was fairly quick and didn’t drag on. Yet, we were left with enough unanswered questions surrounding some of the O6’s motivation that we’ll still be looking forward to these details being filled in. For instance, who tipped off Hurley?  What’s the deal with Sayid?  What did Kate do with Aaron?
  • I liked the parallels between the first trip to the island and this redux.  Hawking encouraged this, as the results become “unpredictable” the less familiar the return trip conditions are.  What was interesting was that it appeared some of the roles changed this time around.  Ben played the role of Hurley feverishly trying to make the flight.  Hurley toted the guitar a la Charlie.  Sayid filled the convict role as he appeared to have an escort with him.  Then once Jack was back on the island, the similarities to the pilot episode were blatant.  See our comparison screen shots below.
  • I loved the mythology piece with Hawking. We finally got some answers surrounding why the island can’t be found easily. We got our first off-island DHARMA station, the Lamp Post, which uses electromagnetic energy to predict the comings and goings of the island.  It will be cool to see some of the other locations around the world that are connected via similar electromagnetic energy.  It would seem Tunisia is one while Uluru may be another.  And by the way, who’s the “fellow” that concocted this station in the first place?  A guess…Faraday.  Not sure the logistics make sense for that, but that’s who popped into my mind right away.
  • Seeing Linus showered in blood on the pay phone at the marina brought on a sense of dread.  The groundwork is laid for a confrontation between Des / Penny and Ben.  If you recall, Ben told Jack that he made a promise to an old friend and that he had a loose end to tie up.  That old friend just may be Charles Widmore and that promise just may be to kill Penny after Widmore changed the rules and allowed Alex to be executed.  You could argue that the marina would be a likely spot to find Des and Penny, seeing how they live on a boat, but logistically, the path from England doesn’t conveniently end in California.  I’m very worried for Penny right now.
  • I loved the “leap of faith” comment from Hawking to Jack as Locke had uttered those same word’s in Season 2’s Man of Science, Man of Faith.
  • It seems like we need to be focused on the concepts of Resurrection and Reincarnation.  Ben elaborated on Jesus’ resurrection to Jack and how everyone is convinced eventually.  These concepts are in play as we find out what happens to Locke as his body returns to the island.
  • Oh, so that’s why Christian had white shoes…
  • Was Locke basically blaming Jack for him having to die?  It sure seemed like it.  Essentially he was saying that he wouldn’t have needed to die if Jack and others had never left the island, which Locke had told them that they weren’t supposed to.
  • Jin appears to be entrenched into the Dharma Intiative as was Faraday as we saw earlier this season.  My hunch is that everyone is going to be stuck in that time frame right now and will have to work to be able to get…back to the future.

Here’s a comparison of Jack at beginning of the pilot episode and upon his return to the island in this episode…

LOST Episode 5×04 “The Little Prince” - Easter Eggs, Screencaps, Analysis

February 5, 2009

After the shocking (and for some, disappointing) death of Danielle Rousseau last season, many worried that we might miss out on her back story. The powers that be assured us that wasn’t the case, and it looks like they’re staying true to their word. As one who wasn’t a particularly big fan of Rousseau, I must admit that this storyline has really sucked me in. Due to the time traveling element, this flashback (if you can call it that) proves to be one of the most interesting yet. I’ll definitely be pulling out the old episodes to brush up on all of Danielle’s old scenes. The new younger, hotter Rousseau with a suddenly back-from-the-dead Jin (WTF?! That was one of the most shocking LOST moments I can remember, even more so than last weeks Widmore reveal) makes for must-watch TV in my book.

Other highlights included:

- The time-traveling Losties first encounter with…the Season 1 Losties. I’m guessing (and hoping) they’ll be more of these encounters in future episodes and I’m anxious to see what happens when they are actually seen or talked to by the past Losties. Remind anyone of Dr. Halliwax’s rabbit(s) from the Orchid video? Halliwax was adamant about not getting the rabbits too close to each other, and given Locke’s reluctance to talk to his former self, it looks like he’s thinking along the same lines. But I’m not sure if Sawyer will be able to hold off next time he sees Kate prancing through the jungle.

- The return of Miss Littleton. I admit I was a little disappointed by the outcome of her storyline, though. I thought if she was the one after Aaron, then maybe we’d see Richard Malkin as the one who tipped her off. No such luck. It looks like Carole was just a decoy to throw us off Ben’s scent.

- When Locke asked if anyone knew French, I was convinced we were going to see Rousseau’s crew (I was already hoping after there was a mysterious brunette in the trailer for this episode).  Turns out that “Besixdouze”, which is written on a can that’s been washed ashore, is French for B612, which coincidentally is the planet that the Little Prince is from.  Perhaps Aaron wasn’t the Little Prince that this episode was named after.  I think it might be the name of Rousseau’s ship.

- Daniel’s explanation that the bloody noses may be due to “duration of exposure” on the island. And since Charlotte and Miles experience the bloody noses before Juliet (who has been on the island for over three years), it makes you wonder. We’ve already been given clues that Charlotte has been on the island (possibly even born there), but the news about Miles came as a surprise.  Could he perhaps be Pierre Chang’s son?

Miles: “Those yahoos have been here for months. I’ve never been here before two weeks ago.”
Daniel: “Are you sure about that?”

- The Ajira water bottle. Looking forward for more to come on this mysterious airline.  A theory is that the Oceanic 6 brought this bottle upon their return to the island and that particular flash was acutally forward in time for the Losties.  Not sure that means that the Oceanic 6 were actually unknowingly shooting at the Losties or if there’s another group there as well (Widmore?).

- Another anagram! After fruitless weeks of shoving odd sounding names into anagram finders (still can’t believe “Efren Salonga” turned up nothing), it was nice to score when “Canton-Rainier” came back with “reincarnation”. Possibly foreshadowing Locke’s reincarnation on the island? Or Jin’s reincarnation in the past? (I’m still convinced he couldn’t have survived that explosion)

Here’s this weeks favorite Easter eggs, screecaps (plus below that is a giant gallery of additional screecaps)… We don’t have any audio yet, but let us know what your favorite lines were and we’ll get a poll up. Loved Sawyer’s “Thank you Lord!…I take that back”

It’s about time we got a new anagram!  Check out the carpet van a.k.a. the hearse. The name “Canton-Rainier” is an anagram for “reincarnation”. Good stuff.

LOST Episode 5×04 “The Little Prince” Preview (possible spoilers)

February 2, 2009

Note: possible spoilers

ABC synopsis:

Kate discovers that someone knows the secret of Aaron’s true parental lineage. Meanwhile, the dramatic shifts through time are placing the lives of the remaining island survivors in extreme peril.

Screencaps (use the arrow keys to go from picture to picture):

Trailer:

Thoughts:

  • It appears that despite Charlotte’s worsening condition at the end of “Jughead”, she recovers enough to be up and walking about with the rest of the Losties
  • I know I heard Claire’s trademark scream in the trailer, and the screencap of her confirms it.  The screencap of Claire, along with Kate, come from Season 1’s “Do No Harm” as Claire is in labor delivering Aaron.  It looks like the Losties will stumble upon this.  Sawyer also mentions that he saw Kate in the jungle.
  • Just prior to Claire’s giving birth to Aaron was the scene with Locke at the hatch when the light comes on (from Season 1’s “Deus Ex Machina”), which is also shown in the screencaps.
  • There is a screencap of a new actress we haven’t seen.  She’s a young brunette.  Could it be a young Rousseau?
