LOST Episode 5×03 “Jughead” Easter Eggs, Audio, and Analysis

January 29, 2009 by Eric

Given that Desmond and Faraday are two of my favorite LOST characters (and had already teamed up to give us arguably the best episode of LOST yet–”The Constant”), I expected myself to enjoy this episode more that I did. Not that it was bad by any means (see highlights below), but maybe my expectations soared a little too high when I realized the focus would be on the aforementioned chrononauts. Overall I found it enjoyable, and a nice departure from the O6 storyline.

Some of my favorite moments include:

-Meeting some new (old?) Others. The reveal of “Jones” as Widmore was very well done. Even though his screen time was limited up to that point, he had managed to move to the top of my “people who need a good beatdown” list. Finding out it was Widmore just seemed fitting. The “Jones” nametag was enough of a decoy to throw me off for the most part, however the scene where John “chose” not to shoot him did stick out a little bit–as if it wasn’t really a choice at all, but a necessity to keep the time continuum from becoming even more out of whack. On a sidenote, it was weird that Widmore had a fake name on his coat (Jones) but the Other with the Cunningham coat was actually named Cunningham (we hear Widmore refer to him by name when he’s telling Richard what happened). I’m assuming they had taken these from the US soldiers they killed, so how nice for Cunningham to luck out and have a distant relative in the bunch.
We were also introduced to Ellie, which it seems may be the mysterious Eloise Hawking in her younger years. It’s not a stretch to assume that Hawking is also Faraday’s mother (given the hints from last week compounded by further evidence from this week’s scene between Des and 2008 Widmore). It’s turning into quite the family circus. Speculation about whether Faraday and Widmore are related (and thus Widmore and Hawking if Hawking does indeed turn out to be Faraday’s mom) is bound to ensue. Widmore could either end up as Faraday’s father or uncle (”Shut up, Ellie” sounded like something a brother would say). Could we possibly see Brother Campbell return in the near future? Along those lines, it seems to make sense that if Faraday shared what he knows about Desmond (he’s special, needs to get to the island, but has the ability to deviate from the rules, etc.) with people in the past (Hawking, Widmore, etc.), that this would explain why Desmond has been “steered” along his path by Hawking, Widmore, Brother Campbell, etc.

-Miles using his ghostbusting skills once more (for more than just scavenging boar carcasses).

-The return of Faraday’s mullet. When he told Ellie she looked familiar, I think it was to the woman in the Oxford picture, who may end up being his sister. It would make sense that his sister would look like a younger version of his mother. Plus, with Widmore being such a prick, why would he take care of the sick woman just because he felt responsible. Perhaps there’s more to it like he’s secretly her father. Who knows. 5x03_00049.jpg

-A heavy dose of Alpert. After being deprived last season due to Nestor Carbonell’s casting in “Cane” on CBS, it’s good to see him in a more prominent role this year. It appears that Alpert indeed is very old. Given the time travel element to the show, I wasn’t so sure that his apparent lack of aging wasn’t really just him traveling through time and thus always looking the same age. Time to shoot that theory dead. It’s all clear now as to why Richard kept showing up in Locke’s life. Locke told him when he was to be born and that he’d eventually be their leader (per Jacob), so Richard followed up on it. I’d consider this an “answer”. As to why Richard doesn’t age, I guess we’ll have to stay tuned.

-The reveal of Widmore as Faraday’s benefactor.

-Da bomb. Faraday’s “bury it” suggestion makes me wonder if the burial site will end up being the hatch. We already know that the “limitless energy source” is really at the Orchid, so perhaps the purpose of the hatch is just to contain the h-bomb and it’s leaking radiation.

Time to hear what you think:

Here’s a few galleries of the scenes we thought were the most interesting and chock full of easter egg possibilities.

Desmond at Oxford:

Desmond visits Theresa:

Desmond and “Old” Widmore:

Young Widmore:

Jughead:

It looks like the name of the Department of Physics building was changed at some point from “Clarendon” to “Claredon”. Also, note the numbers making yet another appearance.

I love the resolution that Richard wasn’t traveling through time to visit Locke but that those were additional flashback scenes of Richard traveling off the island. That still doesn’t explain why he stays so young and why he’s always been on the island. I do find it surprising that Richard didn’t seem to understand or know about time traveling capabilities due to the Islands power. Richard seemed very surprised and confused that John Locke was from the future. I loved the episode and agree that Ellie is Ms. Hawking.

    Cheers,

    The Traveler

There is an actual Clarendon Building at Oxford University (http://www.dreamstime.com/muse-clarendon-building-oxford-image3262876) I can’t imagine why the’d change it for the show. Maybe a prop error?

  3. Mike L says:

Name is changed to foreshadow that Clair is dead

  4. john says:

Don’t you think that the woman in the photo with Faraday is Theresa?
Perhaps his one time assistant/gf, and that he did not run away to “America” like Theresa’s friend says, instead embarks on the freighter with Widmore’s crew to fix things? Certainly he went back in time to the Orchid station to try to set something right,,,

What about this? http://i404.photobucket.com/albums/pp128/louye123/bscap015.jpg widmore has a costume tagged with JAMES not Widmore or Charles

    • Jeremy says:

I think the “JAMES” you’re seeing is actually JONES. Widmore was either wearing it to disguise his true identity or he stole it from one of the US military soldiers that they killed. I was convinced it was the latter until Widmore called out his comrade Cunningham by name since that guy actually had Cunningham on his uniform, which would make it more unlikely that they stole the uniforms.

  6. mike says:

One thing i wanna know is what is up with the epic battle of the light monster vs the smoke monster.

The light monster is what saved Kate from the smoke monster, and what locke saw the first time - (when he sees the smoke monster he is equally intrigued but it was not what he saw the first time) Locke described the light monster as the “eye” of the Island.

Is this island simply Paradoxiland? Is it the chaos theory embodied where everything is possible just not probable?

  7. Henry says:

I wonder if Widmore’s name tag JONES is a reference to the episode’s Title: “Jughead.” Forsythe P. Jones is Jughead’s real name in the Archie comics.

  8. Shelley says:

I love the painting in Widmores office, with the NAMASTE and the polar bear, I wish I could see it better… the other paintings look like Jackson Pollock work.

Ellie is Eloise. Eloise is Daniels Mom which is why he named his rat Eloise. Havent figured out who his Dad is yet. Widmore said his name was Charles Widmore when Locke asked him…. I wonder if he is just wearing someone elses shirt?

Jughead could be the end of the island, maybe thats the ‘out’ at the end of the show?

  9. Charlie Pace says:

Ellie is defiantly Daniel’s mother. When he says to her you look so much like her, he could either be referring to his mother in the future or Teresa, who I believe we will find out was not so much a girlfriend but possibly a sister. Sounds crazy I know, but Faraday seems like a one woman guy to me.

Also, Widmore is Locke’s father. Oh yeah. I think when he finds out about Locke he goes and finds his mother and dates her to be the future leaders father. Or maybe we will see that it was Widmore in the car who hit Locke’s mother while she is pregnant. Locke’s grandmother says to his mother, hes too old for you. Meaning, the father who we never see, must be at least 18-24, which is about how old Widmore appears to be on the island.

  10. Steve McCabe says:

This may not be anything signifigant… but take a good look at the women behind the desk at Oxford when Desmond tries to find out where Faraday is… she looks an awful lot like the same lady who was at the loading gate to Flight 815… the same lady who made an extra effort for Hurley to get on the plane, and also asked for assistance from a “co-worker” to carry John Locke on the plane. There was something about the way she asked Desmond why he was seeking the information, and I think it’s because Widmoore or the Others have a damn far reach into everything we’ve seen.

If you own the previous episodes of LOST… re-watch the episode where it shows everyone trying to make the flight, and Hurley wakes up late, and barely makes it…. watch carefully when Hurley runs through the airport, and up the counter… take a good look at the people he has to weave through and avoid….. now watch just as carefully when he finds out hes at the wrong gate, and goes to a completely different gate, and as he gets up to the counter, he weaves through and avoids the same exact group of people! I never knew what this meant, and I still dont, but I have an idea that Hurley was meant to make that flight, and time was altered in some way to help….
